Late spring we stuck our heads together. Fire starter Sergi of , young zorro Alejandro of and, myself, big beardy Job of .
We were to organise a 5th European Wooden Surfboard Meet. To add insult to injury we would have it at a wavepool in Scotland. We thought big and reached across the globe to invite makers from outside Europe. Icons of the craft too. It was difficult - lots of gusto, tough to make time, find funds. See: this is a non-competitive and non-commercial meeting. No sponsors, banners nor interference from marketeers. Independence is a great good.
'Make the call, and people will answer'. We repeated the words of like a mantra. And as the deadline crept nearer people started to respond. Slowly but steadily names started to trickle in.
In the weekend of 3-5 October we had the biggest and bestest European Wooden Surfboard Meet until now: 28 makers mainly from Europe, a few from the US, 56 boards in an wide array of constructions, 2 all wooden surf sessions in the pool with so many people that some were removed 'for safety reasons'. Everyone talked, learned, shared, laughed and surfed. And made it into an awesome weekend. Spreading the stoke between each other, visitors and other surfers.
Now that weekend is past. The memories remain. And fuel the fire that helps each of us continue our journey. Next year we will meet again.
Thanks Sergi for your crazy ideas and need for change. Thanks Alejandro for your relentless drive and eye for detail upping the quality of the meet for years to come. Thanks to all makers, surfers, artists and crew for all the love. Grateful doing what we do.
