Jabali Surfboards At Jabali Surfboards we design, craft and ride handmade wooden surfboards, which surf well, look good and are ecofriendly

At Jabali Surfboards we design, build and ride eco-friendly wooden surfboards which look good and ride well. Part of our vision on surfboards was magnificently captured by Cons Quast in his short documentary: https://vimeo.com/232269763

A few relevant characteristics of woods that we use:

+ Hardness
+ Modulus of Rupture
+ Density
At Jabalí we do not use just one type of wood - we optimise our builds by placing the most suitable material right in the spot where it is needed.
This approach allows us to make better boards - lighter and more durable - using eco-friendlier ingredients.

We were to organise a 5th European Wooden Surfboard Meet. To add insult to injury we would have it at a wavepool in Scotland. We thought big and reached across the globe to invite makers from outside Europe. Icons of the craft too. It was difficult - lots of gusto, tough to make time, find funds. See: this is a non-competitive and non-commercial meeting. No sponsors, banners nor interference from marketeers. Independence is a great good.
'Make the call, and people will answer'. We repeated the words of like a mantra. And as the deadline crept nearer people started to respond. Slowly but steadily names started to trickle in.
In the weekend of 3-5 October we had the biggest and bestest European Wooden Surfboard Meet until now: 28 makers mainly from Europe, a few from the US, 56 boards in an wide array of constructions, 2 all wooden surf sessions in the pool with so many people that some were removed 'for safety reasons'. Everyone talked, learned, shared, laughed and surfed. And made it into an awesome weekend. Spreading the stoke between each other, visitors and other surfers.
Now that weekend is past. The memories remain. And fuel the fire that helps each of us continue our journey. Next year we will meet again.
Thanks Sergi for your crazy ideas and need for change. Thanks Alejandro for your relentless drive and eye for detail upping the quality of the meet for years to come. Thanks to all makers, surfers, artists and crew for all the love. Grateful doing what we do.

Just back from a delicious summer tour along the Atlantic coast.
One of the fun parts of travelling along surfspots is sharing our work with fellow surfers. Show them the beauty and quality of our handcrafted wooden boards.
And let them feel first hand that our boards are not heavy - after which we can continue our talk about all the other aspects of the bijoux, as some call them.

Eyeballing a shape in the atelier - my happy place.
2024 is a year for the books in respect of board making, life and love. As always we take foreward what we learned in an attempt to get better at all of them.
2025 will be a celebration year as Jabalí will exist 10 years. We have got a few bigger things lined up to mark this milestone and will sprinkle some smaller gestures in-between as we go.
Keep you posted.

Over the last ten years we have learned a lot from other boardmakers and shapers, but always followed our own path.
Free thinking, careful engineering and testing, while keeping a sharp eye on core values and overall objectives.

It helped us progress and innovate to the level we are now. We are stoked to be here, and excited about where we are heading.
PS: Our UltraLight construction is very light - this twinfin weights 2450gr.

As from 7 July 2021 the Jabali page is frozen.
Perhaps we will defrost her in time, however currently too many social media outlets are vying for attention.
We will continue the Jabali Surfboards tale on Instagram (by Facebook) in both regular posts and stories. Thanks for your time and attention. And... see you there.

Stoked to be one of the four Belgian shapers interviewed by the weekend journal 'Sabato' of economic newspaper De Tijd.
The article touches upon the quest for eco-friendlier surfboards of wood, exploring the (re)use of alternative materials, and my background as shaping engineer.
A celebration of Belgian surf is organised by .helsen this Sunday from 13:00 to 18:00 at Surfing Elephant - See you there!

Two years ago we made boards with wood from the archeological services in Roeselare, Flanders.
The tail of this flyin' pyama contains a mosaic with 2000-years-old oak wood.
And she surfs pretty awesome too!
