Why was the name RONIN chosen for our dojo?

The name RONIN was not chosen because a rōnin is a samurai without a master, and certainly not because he symbolizes a dishonorable or rudderless warrior...

On the contrary!

Our choice of the name RONIN is inspired by the story of the 47 Rōnin, one of the most famous stories in Japanese martial tradition. They faced the loss of their master, but did not lose their honor, loyalty, discipline, and sense of duty in the process.

When their master was no longer among them, they did not choose to go their own way and abandon their principles. They remained true to their values ​​and to the promise they had made to their master. Their story is therefore often seen as a powerful example of the values ​​associated with Bushido: loyalty, honor, courage, self-discipline, and sacrifice. Therefore, to us, RONIN does not stand for a warrior who has lost his master, but for a warrior who, even when he loses his master, does not lose his principles.

For us, the true meaning of RONIN therefore lies in the question:

Who are you when no one stands above you anymore to give you direction?

Do you remain true to what you have learned from them, to your values, and to the path you have chosen?

That is the spirit we wish to convey with the name RONIN.

To us, a RONIN is someone who can stand on his own two feet but never forgets where he comes from. Someone who does not confuse freedom with a lack of discipline. Someone who can walk his own path, but remains faithful to his principles, his master, his training partners, and the martial art he practices.

RONIN therefore does not mean: dishonorable.
RONIN does not mean: without values.
RONIN does not mean: without direction.

For us, RONIN means:
Loyalty when things get tough.
Discipline when no one is watching.
Respect for those who have opened the way for us.
And the courage to continue walking the path when that path is no longer mapped out for us.

That is the meaning we give to the name RONIN.

RONIN — not because the master is absent, but because the lessons of the master live on.

Op donderdag 13 augustus 2026 gaven enkele RONIN M.M.A. leden de ganse dag onder een verzengende zon en een temperatuur van meer dan 30 graden tientallen Initiaties Muaythai & Kickboxing voor de Vlaamse Kickboks & Muaythai Organisatie tijdens de Sportzomer van Sport Vlaanderen Editie 2026.
