Monopoly was already a game about losing all your money slowly, so adding sailing just makes it more realistic.
In the sailing version, you don’t buy Boardwalk. You buy a new alternator, two winch handles, bottom paint, a bilge pump, three mystery hoses, and a chartplotter update you didn’t know you needed until it stopped working at the worst possible moment. Every time you pass “Go,” you collect $200 and immediately hand it to the marina office.
The Chance cards are things like “Your head is clogged,” “Unexpected haulout,” “Guest dropped sunglasses into the cockpit drain,” and “Congratulations, your sailmaker has a new vacation home.”
Still, somehow we keep playing. Because every now and then, the wind fills in, the boat heels just right, the sun hits the water, and for five glorious minutes you forget the entire game is financially rigged against you.
