In short, the main idea and purpose of this project is getting more bicycles on Antwerp's streets. More silence in the streets, cleaner air, less fatal accidents (bicycles don't kill!), healthier bodies, more pedestrians being able to comfortably walk in the city without stress. More people being mobile at lesser cost: half year public transport= 1 bicycle which can be used for over 10! We are two
brothers: a Sociologist with some education in urban sociology and Social Geography as well, and a student in Real estate management. We both grew up inside the skateboarding culture which still inspires us in many different ways today. One important one is how it is possible to use the city differently form how many people think it should be. For us in this case it means that cities were not merely built for cars! Although many car drivers unfortunately think they were... There should be (much more) space to travel in freedom for pedestrians, cyclists and good public transport as well! I am confident that bicycles facilitate social interaction in the streets. According to the architect Jan Gehl slow traffic, like walking and cycling, increase the chances of meeting acquaintances and being able to have a chat with them, there is the possibility of traveling accompanied and, most important, meeting strangers! I believe that on a greater scale this helps general well being and not only more pleasurable but also safer streets. We, that is my brother who resides in The Netherlands and I offer bicycles mostly from Holland. They are second hand but mostly of superior quality! They had to be able to stand the Dutch weather conditions like rain, snow, ice and worst: salt they use during the winter, against ice on the streets. We try to offer bicycles of superior quality and keep them affordable, so most people can become more mobile without time schedule, route or money restrictions. Our ambition is to lower our prices in the future, but it fully depends on the demand, and hopefully on future sponsors (would be very nice). Low demand makes this ambition difficult for us… So more publicity will eventually mean lower prices, thus greater affordability for (future) bicycle owners.
