Body weight alone does not always determine a person’s health or fitness. What matters more is body composition, especially body fat percentage. Many athletes and physically active individuals may weigh more than average because of higher muscle mass, yet they remain healthy with low body fat levels. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Body Mass Index (BMI) is only a screening tool and does not distinguish between fat and muscle.

Research from Harvard Health Publishing also explains that BMI can incorrectly classify muscular people as overweight because muscle is denser than fat. A person with low body fat, strong muscles, and good cardiovascular fitness may be healthier than someone with a lower weight but a higher fat percentage. Body composition provides a clearer picture of overall health than the number on a scale.

Therefore, focusing only on body weight can be misleading. Maintaining a healthy body fat percentage, balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and muscle strength are more important indicators of long-term health and fitness than weight alone.
