দাবার অরিজিন ভারত । ষষ্ঠ শতকে যখন এই খেলাটা ভারতে তৈরী হয়, তখন চার ধরণের ঘুটি দিয়ে খেলাটা খেলা হতো । ঘুটিগুলা তখনকার সময়ের আর্মির চারটা ডিভিশন অনুযায়ী ভাগ করা হতো ।

১. পদাতিক (পোওন)

২.অশ্বারোহী (নাইট)

৩.গজারোহী বা হস্তি বাহিনী (বিশপ)

৪. রথারোহী (বোট)

তখন দাবার বর্তমানের মতো রঙিন ছিলো না । পুরো বোর্ডটা হতো একরঙা । ৮×৮ টা দাগ টানা থাকতো । খেলাটাকে ঠিক দাবা ও বলা হতো না । বলা হতো “চতুরঙ্গ” । (বলে রাখি, রবীন্দ্রনাথের এই নামে একটা নাটক আছে)

তারপর দাবা খেলা ভারত থেকে ধীরেধীরে ম্যাপের পশ্চিমে ছড়াতে শুরু করলো । সপ্তম শতকে খেলাটা প্রথমে গেলো পারস্য বা ইরানে । সেখানে গিয়ে এর নাম হয় “শতরঞ্জি” । পারস্যে রাজাকে বলা হয় “শাহ” । রাজা যখন বিপদে পড়েছে, সেটাকে বলা হতো “শাহমাত”। সেখান থেকেই “চেকমেট” শব্দটা আসে !

তারপর ইরান যখন মুসলমানদের দখলে আসলো(৬৫১ খ্রি.), তখন মুসলমানরা খেলাটাকে এডাপ্ট করে নিলো ।

মুসলমানরা ধীরেধীরে দক্ষিন ইউরোপের দিকে গেলো (৭১১ খ্রিস্টাব্দে, আইবেরিয়া দখল করে) সাথে দাবাও প্রসার পেতে শুরু করলো ঐদিকে । দাবা চলে গেলো উত্তর আমেরিকা, স্পেন এসব জায়গায় । তবে বলা দরকার, মুসলমানদের শাসনামলে দাবার ঘুটিগুলায় প্রাণীর মূর্তি ব্যবহার বন্ধ করে দেয়া হয়েছিলো ।

বর্তমানে আমরা বিশপ বা পৌন এর যে আকার দেখি সেটা মুসলমানদের তৈরী করা । আগে এগুলার জায়গায় ফিগারিটিভ পিস ব্যবহার হতো (ঘোড়া বা নাইট যেরকম)।

ইউরোপে প্রচলিত হওয়ার পর ইউরোপীয়রা বোর্ডে কালার যোগ করলো । এখনকার যে দুইরঙের রঙিন বোর্ড দেখতে পাই সেটা ১০-১১ শতকের দিকে তৈরী । তারা খেলাটাকে বেশ ডাইনামিক করে ফেলে ।

ভারতে বিশপ বা হাতির মুভ ছিলো কোণাকুনি দুইঘর । বিশপ অন্য ঘুটির উপর দিয়ে জাম্প করতে পারতো । ইউরোপীয়ানরা সেটাকে করে দিলো বর্তমানে যা নমরা দেখি ।

ভারত এবং পারস্যে যে পিসটা মন্ত্রী বা ফার্জ নামে পরিচিত ছিলো সেটাকে বলা হলো “কুইন” । পরে পনেরো শতকের দিকে কুইনের ক্ষমতাও অনেক বাড়ানো হলো ।

মন্ত্রী ভারতে ছিলো দুর্বলতম ঘুটি । কোনাকোনি একঘর মাত্র যেতে পারতো । কিন্তু স্প্যানিশরা কুইনকে সর্বোচ্চ ক্ষমতা দিয়ে দিলো । অবশ্য তখন রাণী ইসাবেলার শাসনামল ছিলো !

মজার ব্যাপার হচ্ছে পিসের সংখ্যা (১৬ টা) কখনো চেঞ্জ হয়নি । পিসগুলার মুভ শুধু পরিবর্তন হয়েছে । দাবায় চীন এবং জাপানেরও কিছু প্রভাব আছে তবে সেগুলা ভিজুয়াল না, স্ট্র্যাটেজিক । আধুনিক দাবার ইতিহাস একবাক্যে যদি বলি - উনিশ শতকে (১৮৮৬ সালে) প্রথম ওয়ার্ল্ড চ্যাম্পিয়নশিপ হয় । বিশ শতকে রাশিয়ান ডোমিনেন্স ছিলো দাবায় । ঐটা নিয়ে কোল্ড ওয়ারের সময়ের কিছু ঘটনাও আছে ; সেটা নিয়ে আরেকদিন আলাপ করা যাবে ।
