For the past 30 years, satellites have helped scientists track the evolution of the Padma River in Bangladesh 🛰️

Due to limited bank protection and a sandy riverbed, the Padma’s banks are susceptible to rapid erosion as the river twists and turns its way through the landscape.

Over time, this erosion carves away the river’s outer edges, leaving scars where water once flowed.

These Landsat images from 1944-2018 help scientists measure erosion on the Padma River and note differences in the river's width, depth, shape, and overall appearance.

One of the major rivers of Bangladesh has been growing in size, transforming in shape, and changing in location for decades. Each twist and zigzag of the river tells a different geologic story about the power of erosion.
