Meet Madeleine Lum, one of our experienced QLD Boundary Umpires! 🏉

“I come from a track and field background and was looking for an off season activity to keep fit. There was another girl that was boundary umpiring for the same reason and Invited me to umpire in the Yarra Valley league in Victoria. Going higher than country footy was never on my radar - it was just not what girls did. The level of running and strength for throw ins seemed so far out of reach for someone like me. Despite this, I took any opportunity I was given because I enjoyed the challenge and was invited to join the V Line Academy. One day I was spotted by a VFL umpire who asked me if I’d ever considered aiming for the VFL and even AFL, and that I had the potential. It planted a little seed that changed my life and I became determined to aim for that glass ceiling! I have since umpired on the Victorian development squad, QAFL, AFLW, NEAFL and VFL lists.

It’s a challenging space to be a female essentially running with and competing with male athletes but I think it’s really important to create an environment where girls can thrive alongside the guys and have the same opportunities. I couldn’t see it, so I didn’t know I could be it. We still don’t have a female on the boundary in the AFL men’s but I’d like to think that some day soon we will and young girls around the country will see that and believe.”

Meet Amy Furness, one of our QLD Field Umpires! 🏉

“As a kid, football was like my religion. My parents are both from Victoria and prayed that at least one of their Ipswich girls would love AFL too. When looking for my first job I was instantly turned away from the traditional fast food and my Dad suggested AFL. The decision to sign up online was one of the best choices I’ve made in the last couple of years. Starting at the age of 15, I was lucky to instantly connect with one of the older girls at training and will always be grateful for her support. This has got to be what I love about umpiring: the friendships and genuine support not only from the coaches, but your fellow mates on and off the field. I think that this family-like environment between strangers is how we can draw in more aspiring female umpires. It is vital to grow these young girls' confidence so that they can move up through the ranks and reach their goals. As a second year umpire, umpiring QAFL colts and top junior level games in 2021, I have full confidence that this equality is possible.”

Today on , we’re profiling some of our talented QLD female umpires.

Meet Belinda Stewart! Belinda is one of our Goal Umpires, now umpiring at VFL/AFLW level 💪🏼

“I chased my brothers around football fields for over a decade, usually running water, handing out oranges or doing the scoreboard. I was asked to fill in for a goal umpire and did my best trying to emulate the AFL goal umpires that I had seen on TV. I absolutely loved it so I pursued it formally when I started university. A very special group of girls in the umpiring group inspired me to reach higher and higher and thanks to my coaches and friends I was able to progress from community footy to state league. I am now incredibly fortunate to be an AFLW and VFL umpire. It is such a privilege to represent women in umpiring and to see more and more girls find their place in the game.”

🚨 Darcie Gets the Nod in Round 3 Fixture 🚨

QLD’s very own Darcie Rehbein was fortunate enough to make her AFLW debut in the Goals in the Round 3 Match between the Brisbane Lions and Carlton on Tuesday the 25th of January.

Darcie has worked extremely hard in the past few seasons, earning a QAFL Reserves Grand Final appointment in 2021 before being elevated to the AFLW panel this year.

Congratulations Darcie and best of luck for the remainder of this season and beyond!

What a fantastic turnout for the 2021 Mt Coot-tha Handicap Classic! For the 19 people who tackled the beast that is 'Coot-Tha' we witnessed determination, effort, PB's smashed and plenty of mentality. Well done to all who attended, however, there can only be one King and Queen of the Mountain. Congratulations to Brett Sandham (Outright Winner) and Steph Carter who were crowned King and Queen of the Mountain. Special mention goes to Ty Duncan, who off a 19 minute and 15 second handicap, posted a time of 40:09 and managed finish 5th overall.

Don't forget the 5th Annual Christmas Park Run coming up next Saturday at New Farm Park! Come dressed in your best 'Umpire Green' to create a sea of green across the park!
