The spine is typically strong and robust.
Bending and loading are safe - done regularly, they build resilience rather than wear you out. So why is it that our back causes us issues when we bend down to pick up a sock or pull a w**d? Maybe it’s the poor sleep, the stress, the sitting at the desk, the lack of strength to support the spine and the trivial movement such as picking up the sock is the final message from your body to do something different.

Exercise discomfort is often misunderstood as something negative, when in reality it’s usually a sign that the body is adapting, strengthening, and growing. Most people avoid exercise not because they’re incapable, but because discomfort feels unfamiliar, inconvenient, or mentally challenging. Muscles burn, breathing gets heavier, and effort demands focus — and the brain naturally tries to steer us back toward comfort. But progress rarely lives in comfort.

The ideal weight? If you finish every set without a struggle on the last rep you’re probably going a little light. If rep 10 feels similar to rep 1, the weight is not challenging your muscle. Ideally, the last 2-3 reps should feel genuinely hard. That’s where growth actually happens. So if you’re not being challenged it might be time to increase your weight.

Holiday breaks can be a challenge. Balancing kids, a different environment, just a change of schedule. So even when you’re dealing with a change try to take advantage of the little things you can do to keep the body moving. Walk the stairs, park a little further from where you’re going, use some park equipment, or keep with some level of normalcy even if it’s not exactly the same.
