We love to camp around the most beautiful parts of our state and being safe while doing so is very important.
Campfires are a great way to keep warm but can be dangerous if conditions are not safe - that's where following some simple steps can keep us safe! 🏕️
• The campfire must be no larger than 1 metre by 1 metre. 🔥
• The area 3 metres around and above the campfire must be clear of anything that can burn. 🍂
• Never leave the fire alone. A person who can put out the fire must always stay by the fire. 👀
• The campfire must be put out completely using water before you leave. 💦
On Total Fire Ban Days, you can’t light a campfire. Check the Fire Danger Ratings and consider leaving early if camping in a high fire risk area.

What can I or can't I do during the declared Fire Danger Period, and on days of Total Fire Ban, when fires in the open air are legally restricted?.

Are you heading away this long weekend? Like many, camping might be on your plan and campfires serve a definite purpose when camping. ⛺️
But did you know there are rules around where and when to light them during the Fire Danger Period in Victoria?
The wind must be less than 10 km/h. If you see leaves moving around, there is too much wind. Do not light a fire. 💨
The campfire must only be lit in:
• A properly built fireplace of stone, metal or concrete or a trench at least 30cm deep.
If you are in a State Forest or National Park, there might be other rules you need to know about, so find out before you head out.
On Total Fire Ban Days, you can’t light a campfire. Check the Fire Danger Ratings and consider leaving early if camping in a high fire risk area.

Knowing the difference between the Fire Danger Period and a Total Fire Ban is important. Whether you are planning to do farm work, burn off, head out camping, or use equipment to perform hot works outdoors, we all have a part to play in keeping Victoria safe. Breaking the rules can lead to fines, but more importantly, it can put communities at risk.

What is the difference between the Fire Danger Period and a Total Fire Ban?

🔥The Fire Danger Period is declared by the Country Fire Authority during the hotter, drier months of the year.
During this time, stronger restrictions apply to the use of fire, including activities like burning off, using machinery that may spark, or lighting campfires.
These rules exist to reduce the risk of bushfires, which can start easily and spread quickly in hot, dry, or windy conditions.

The Fire Danger Period doesn’t start or end on the same day everywhere. Each local government area (shire or council) has its own start and end dates. Currently the entire state of Victoria is in the Fire Danger Period, and this can last for several months, depending on local weather conditions and fire risk.

Knowing when the Fire Danger Period is in place will helps you plan. Whether you are doing farm work, burning off, camping, or using equipment outdoors, we all have a part to play in keeping Victoria safe. Breaking the rules can lead to fines, but more importantly, it can put communities at risk.

🚫 Total Fire Bans are called for one or more days when the fire risk is very high. On Total Fire Ban days all fires are banned.

🔥 Want to help during bushfires? Here’s how🔥

Every fire season, many people watch bushfires unfold and feel a strong urge to help when communities are under threat. Those images often bring a mix of emotions: concern, empathy and a desire to do more. This response is completely natural.

One of the most meaningful ways to make a lasting difference is to prepare for the future.

Joining your local CFA brigade is one of the most rewarding ways to give back to your community. Volunteers receive first-class training, ongoing support, and become part of a close-knit team that stands ready year after year — not just on the toughest days, but all year round.

No prior experience is required. Whether on the truck, supporting operations, or helping behind the scenes, every role matters.

If helping during bushfires has been on your mind, consider turning that feeling into action.

If you live or work around Wyuna, we would welcome the opportunity to speak with you. The decision you make today, can last far beyond this fire season. 🚒

Proud of our members who’ve been supporting the Harcourt fires as part of multiple strike teams. A big effort by crews from several brigades, and great teamwork on the fireground.
