Another comp in the books, and the club culture of team players, hard workers, good sports and supportive parents that we have at Coastal BJJ is genuinely amazing.

It takes an immense amount of courage to step on the competitive mats, often against more experienced competitors, and to shake hands after every win, loss or draw, and I'm proud of everyone for giving it their all. I love to celebrate the wins as much as anyone, but I'm even more stoked to see that when our kids lose a match, then immediately get up for their next go with a smile on their face. We even had athletes who won gold, silver and bronze medals turn up to train this afternoon, the day after a hard competition! That kind of enthusiasm tells me we're doing something right.

Hats off to Hunter G, Lennix, Addis, Quinn, Ryan, Nick, Harry, Dillon, Violet and Hunter S, you've all done yourselves proud. Thanks to the rest of the team who train all term, none of us could compete without training partners to help us get better. Thank you to Ethan Duniam Tracey Aldridge and Callan Walker from 360 Martial Arts, their continual support for my own BJJ is the reason Coastal exists, and I'm sure I would have gotten leg locked to s**t yesterday if it weren't for Ethan's corner advice too 😅 special mention to Vennessa Harney for being in my corner in an entirely different but utterly essential way too, the weekend would be unhinged chaos without your help!

My favourite quote of the weekend came from a point scorer, who watched Nick drive a double leg takedown from one side of the mat to the other to finish it, who then looked at me and said "what kind of savages are you breeding on the NW coast?! That's awesome!"

The kind of savages who work hard, play hard, and aren't going anywhere without carrying our mates up with us.

The last friday of every month, we're running an open mat. First one is tomorrow night!

5pm -5:45pm for Juniors (12 and under), live games + sparring

6pm - 7:30pm for Seniors (13+), sparring + space to work on your skills

If you were new to the club last night, can you please ensure you message the page if your student was happy with their trial and would like to come back, as we have a few other parents waiting on potential enrolment as well.

For all our returning Mini and Youth members, first session back will be Tuesday 5th of May 💪

Minis (7 - 10 years) 4:15pm Tuesdays
Youth (11 - 16 years) 5pm Tuesdays and 3pm Sundays
Adults (16+) 6:15pm Tuesdays and 4pm Sundays

Newcomers are always welcome! Jiu Jitsu is an awesome way to develop confidence, resilience, problem solving and strong friendships, and the skillset of being able to wrestle effectively comes in handy too!

Awesome day in Launceston for the first Tasmanian Submission Championships event for the year.

This was our club's first event entering, and I couldn't be more stoked with how everyone went. As a team, we got some wins, stuck out some tough losses, and earned some hard fought medals.

But more importantly, every single competitor who hopped on the floor today worked hard, grit their teeth through some rough spots, listened to coaching advice, and win lose or draw, walked off the mat after with a grin and a hunger for more. That work ethic and desire to have fun in the sport gets channelled into working on our weak spots, and everyone gets better from the lessons learned on days like this!

Special shoutout to Vennessa Harney, who took on the role as defacto team manager, sending up immediate bat signals to me whenever our competitors were up for a match; it gave me the ability to focus on cornering our competitors. Thanks to all the parents as well who brought their kids to Launceston today and supported, spectators and siblings from our club, refs and crew from TSC, and last but never least, my coaches and team at 360 Martial Arts for continually giving me sound advice as I continue my own coaching journey too.
