What does advancing in yoga actually look like?

It’s easy to think it means getting into a more difficult pose.

A stronger arm balance.
A deeper backbend.
Finally getting your splits.

And yes, you might become stronger, more flexible and able to do things with your body that you couldn’t do before. And they are fun!

But that’s not really the point.

Real advancement might look like noticing when you’re pushing yourself too hard and choosing to stop.

It might be becoming more aware of your thoughts, your habits and the way you react to things.

It might be accepting that some days your body feels strong and other days it doesn’t, and being okay with both.

It might be letting go of the need to compare yourself to the person on the mat beside you.

It might be learning to be present, rather than constantly thinking about what comes next.

Being a little kinder to yourself and finding a little more peace with who you are, exactly as you are.

And then, hopefully, you take some of that with you when you leave the mat.

Because yoga isn’t really about what you can do with your body for an hour on a mat. It’s about what you do when you leave the studio and go back to your actual life.

The awareness, acceptance and presence you practise on your mat can help you navigate the stress, demands and uncertainty of everyday life with a little more calm.

You might become less reactive and more resilient.

Less critical of yourself and more accepting.

More able to pause, take a breath and recognise what you need.

Perhaps the most advanced thing you can do in yoga isn’t getting your feet behind your head.

Perhaps it’s learning to be fully present in the life you already have.

Think about it, who is really looking after you?

Well we do 😊

At Yoga Bayside, we give you the space to move, breathe, slow down and take care of yourself.

But I also know it’s more than that.

We spend our lives looking after other people. Can you relate?

Our children, our partners, our families, our friends, our colleagues. We remember everyone else’s appointments, birthdays and problems. We make sure everyone else is okay.

But much too often we become the person who gets left off the list.

That’s why I wanted Yoga Bayside to be more than just somewhere you come to move.

I wanted it to be somewhere you could walk through the door and, for an hour, not have to be everything to everyone else.

A place where you can move your body in the way that suits you, take a breath, be part of a supportive community and simply have a little time that belongs to you.

Because everyone needs somewhere they can simply show up and be looked after. This is not a luxury, or something nice to have if you can find the time. This is essential for our physical health, but even more importantly for our mental health.

We all need to be taken care of and that’s what we hope Yoga Bayside can be for you.

See you there.

Yesterday was the 1st day of SPRING…..

As the days start getting a little longer and warmer and you naturally begin to align to the shift in energy. Feeling a little more energized, inspired and perhaps enthusiastic.

You might find yourself starting to SPRING CLEAN….

Did you know that cultures all over the globe have been spring cleaning for centuries.

What they all have in common is the symbolism of renewal and transition. Clearing and cleansing the space, removing any old stagnant energy to create space and invite in the new.

It is a potent time to focus with intention on what feelings you want to create for yourself in this new season.

It’s an opportunity for a RESET and to consciously choose what you want to create for YOURSELF, and what you are ready to let go of.

Think of habits, old patterns, beliefs and fears that have come to your awareness that are holding you back from having more FREEDOM, FUN, JOY, CONTENTMENT, LOVE, PEACE or whatever feelings you would like more of.

One of the ways to prepare for SPRING is to clear and cleanse your space so that it energises and uplifts you.

Here is a detailed guide that created that will help.

5 STEPS TO ENERGISE YOU & YOUR SPACE

It includes five simple steps to rejuvenate your energy and create a space that feels uplifting and nurturing so you can focus on your needs and what is important to you.
