DUMBBELL SHOULDER PRESS: WHY FORM MATTERS

The dumbbell shoulder press is one of the most effective exercises for developing strength and muscle through the shoulders. However, it’s also one of the most commonly performed incorrectly.

Key technique points:

• Keep your feet planted firmly on the floor.
• Brace your core and keep your ribcage down.
• Avoid excessive arching through the lower back.
• Position your elbows slightly in front of your body rather than directly out to the side.
• Press the dumbbells overhead in a controlled manner and lower them under control.

Why does this matter?

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, making stability and control essential during overhead movements.

Common mistakes such as excessive back arching, poor shoulder positioning and using momentum can increase stress on the shoulders and lower back while reducing the effectiveness of the exercise.

Remember, the goal isn’t simply to move the weight. The goal is to challenge the muscles while allowing the joints to move efficiently.

In most cases, a lighter weight with good technique will produce better long-term results than a heavier weight performed poorly.
