The tragic passing of Piper, a tourist has reignited the debate over the Dingoes Wongari on Fraser K’gari island. Our thoughts and prayers go out Piper’s family. As frequent visitors to the island ourselves we have had many interactions with the dingoes. They are wild dangerous animals capable of bringing down brumby, wallabies etc. They are masterful hunters yet the island isn’t sufficiently managed to recognise this. Culling the dingoes is not in our view the right thing to do, It further reduces the gene pool on the island by up to 10% - this is significant. There are between 100-200 Dingoes on the island and the numbers are managed by nature. Killing 10 does nothing, their population is dictated by food availability. 99% of dingoes stay a healthy distance away from people. It is not safe for anyone male or female to be alone on the beach. Hopefully this conversation will enable a better management plan for this island which doesn’t involve shutting the island off to tourists or culling the dingoes. There are examples of wild dangerous animals all over the world, surely we need to dig deeper than euthanasing a few dingoes to solve what is considered a problem by authorities.
