We have a new Club champion! A big congratulations goes to Adrian Bygrave!

Monday November 6 saw 21 German Club members converge on the Woodville table tennis centre for the annual club championship event.
In six groups of 3 or 4, the first priority of the players was to finish top 2 in the group to qualify for the ‘top half’ of the draw.
Another group phase with four groups of 3 became quite cut throat as only the top player of each group was to progress to the semi final.

After the dust settled Adrian Bygrave, Dale McDonald, Dave Lowe and Geoff Langhams advanced to the top 4 play off. Adrian accounted for Geoff in 3 games but the match of the night was the second semi-final between Dale and Dave. After 4 tight games the scores were still level. Dave shifted into another gear and grabbed a seemingly deciding 8-2 lead. However you can never discount Combat Wombat and despite a fault serve, he leveled the scores at 10 all. A tight last two points and Dale progressed to the championship final by the tightest of margins.

Adrian however, still without dropping a single game thus far, reigned supreme in the final. With lighting fast pick ups and a low unforced error count he put the pressure on his opponent and despite some great attacking shots from Dale, Adrian quickly ran away with the match and ensured a new name will be engraved (Bygraved?) on the German Club honour board.

Division 2

With an injury list now comparable to the West Coast Eagles (Pickering - Knee, Bygrave - Back) We had to call on club legend Tony Stacey to fill in and help us avoid a forfeit. His last Pennant match was in 2012, Coming up against a relatively unknown team from Payneham it was Tony who was the hero of the night winning his 2nd single which turned out to be the pivotal result. Combat Wombat did his duties with 2 solid wins including the last of the night to seal the team victory and our fearless Captain Paul Grant shook off last weeks rust to win both his singles in hard fought 5 set encounters. Hopefully next week we will have 3 fit players or we might have to bring Gus out of retirement!

Division 6

With Michael omitted this week it was Con Gatis who filled his big shoes to aplomb winning his first match in a massive 5 setter. Anthony soon followed getting a confidence boosting 4 set win and the match score was 2-4 going into the last round of singles. Adrian kept the match alive also winning in 4 sets, but the experience of Brighton got them the last 2 matches both in 4 sets and again it is so close, yet so far. Once you guys get that first win on the board I'm sure the flood gates will open. Keep fighting fellas

Division 2

A much tougher test this week against Payneham 1. Adrian getting 2 wins on the board before injuring his back. Incredibly (or stupidly) he played the last match in obvious pain, still only falling short in an advantage 4th set. Match of the night was actually the first match of the night. A see-sawing battle between the Combat Wombat and Andrew Scotland. Locked at 2 sets all it wasn't until 1-8 in the decider that CW did what he does best.. again.. and claw his way back to victory14-12. Unfortunately the highlights ended there!

Division 6

After losing the first match of the night in 5 sets, it was Michael that got the team on the board also grinding out a 5 set win. Despite scores being close, the next win was just out of reach, then Adrian had to use all the cunning and guile he has in his armoury ,after being 2-0 up to eventually seal the 5th set in a marathon 17-15 finish. Another tough 5 set loss followed before Adrian secured his 2nd win for the night. With some really close results this match could have gone either way. That first team win is only just around the corner.

Division 2

The season got off to a perfect start for our Div 2 side. New recruit Adrian Bygrave was rock solid winning his 3 matches, Captain Paul Grant showed incredible composure saving 5 match points against the very much improved Craig Farley in the first match of the night, then powered through his final 2 matches. After winning his first 2 matches, fatigue started to set in, but as he does the Combatt Wombat lived up to his reputation and burrowed in to complete the clean sweep for the team

Division 6

The Div 6 boys toiled away against a strong East Adelaide outfit. Adrian, Michael and Anthony all getting 1 win each. Match of the night saw Michael just fall short in a 5 set epic.

Our new div 6 side of Anthony Debono, Michael Debono and Adrian Macolino almost got the chocolates first up, falling at the final hurdle to Woodville.

Highlight of the night was Adrian's come back from 0-2 to conquer Woodville veteran Kamillo Vernik 11-9 in the 5th

This weekend our club was shocked and rocked to the core by the news that our German Club member Randell Taylor was sadly and cruelly killed in a bicycle accident.

Randell had only been a member for about a year but had already made a big impact on our club. His zest for sport and life in general and his engaging ways made him a very popular member.

He will be sadly missed on our Monday nights.



Our thoughts are with his wife Mel, his family and many friends in the trailrunning, cycling, rogaining, geocaching and table tennis community

Great to have our oldest/ longest serving player, and Table Tennis legend Gus Bigalske out for his first hit since COVID19 entered our lives back in March. Still wielding his trademark chop, Good to see you Gus!

So happy to be back playing table tennis after our 'COVID off-season'.. Thank you to our friends at Brighton Table Tennis Club for inviting us down for a night of hits, beers and laughs, A great sign of life slowly going back to normal.

*A highlight of the night was witnessing our oldest player Lloyd (81 years young) defeat Brighton's Ethan (14 years old) 11-8, 9-11, 11-9. A perfect example of the beauty of our sport. Never too old or young!!
