We aim to spread the joys & health benefits of orienteering throughout the Illawarra and southern/south eastern Sydney regions. Orienteering, also known as "the thought sport", is a great way to explore not only your local area but other areas as well.

Our small contingent had some good results at the NSW Championships. Saturday's Middle distance was on a great map titled Gulgaba Gullies. And the name says it all - many gullies with a large number of erosion gullies with steep sides in many places. Vegetation was not too bad - you could see the lay of the land as you moved through your course. Everyone enjoyed their courses.
Middle distance placings were:
1st Vicki W65AS, Michael M35AS
2nd Phillip M35AS, Pippa W16A
7th John.
Glen did not complete his course due to a suspected hamstring tear. Consequently he did not venture out in the long distance.
The long distance was on a map titled Tuckland State Forest. The vegetation was thicker and taller than Saturday. Also we ventured into areas with rock, which in places was very rocky under foot. So not quite as enjoyable as Saturday.

Well done to the combined SHOO/IKO Div 1 team who took out top spot at the metroleague finals today at Glenbrook. Fantastic effort from our medallists Joel, Phil, Angus, Rory, Euan and Craig. Well done all👏👏👏
Thanks also to all other team members who ran during the season, turning up in all weathers. No win for Divs 2,3,4 & 5 but there’s always next year.

Many thanks to Margaret for a wonderful IKO event around Stanwell Park today 🙏 We had 25 entries including several groups comprising family and friends, some of whom were completing their very first orienteering event! Was it Keith’s media spot on ABC Illawarra yesterday? Or Margaret’s family connections with her niece bringing along some friends? Either way it was nice to see some new people enjoying their introduction to the sport.

Margaret made the most of the map, featuring pretty rainforest, trickling streams, beachfront dunes and an interesting art installation that had us counting birds nests. Back at the finish we even had a paraglider come in to land just metres away from us!

Well done to David for winning the long course, and to local father/son duo Paul and Dominic for out-running all the experienced orienteers on the medium course.

Goldseekers managed to provide great weather for the School's Orienteering Championships. Considering at the start of the week the maximum daytime was 6 degrees the maximum today was 16 degrees.it felt cooler whenever the sun went behind a cloud but out on the course it didn't matter.
Our small band of IKO orienteers all placed well.
Pippa (equal first), Vicki 1st, Michael 1st, Margaret 2nd, Phillip 2nd and Glenn 3rd.
The terrain provided good running with open farmland and very little fallen timber in forested sections. Thank you Goldseekers for a very enjoyable event

Meanwhile in Poland Peter and Julie have been enjoying the hot European summer at the World Masters. Getting in some sightseeing as well as competing, here we see Peter being interviewed by James Lithgow. Although not competing,Julie is Peter’s support crew and tour operator for the trip! Next year WMOC will be in Japan.
