Faces of Northern Mongolia
we have spent the last week travelling into the Northern most region of Mongolia up near the Russian border
weโve met so many friendly people along the way. Nomadic horse herders, nomadic reindeer herders, a village shaman, farmers, & local families
we have been invited into their homes, fed until we are too full to move, laughed, and shared stories
these people are people of the land and sky. their spiritual beliefs and practices are a mix between local shamanic and Tibetan Buddhist traditions
they are tough, life is short, they worship their land and animals, they live in strong family groups, and have powerful community connections. they are open, friendly, funny, and content with the very little they have
because educating girls is considered more important than educating boys (boys can do manual work), girls head to the cities and dont want to return to the country - so many young men remain single unable to meet the education or financial needs of the citified girls
but these guys gallop through rivers and over mountains on wild horses, they build houses from the trees around them, they round herds of reindeer & yak on motorbikes, they can read the land and sky blind folded yet they are sensitive, gentle & caring
the women who choose nomadic life, choose a life of harsh conditions, constant movement, very few possessions. there is no running water or electricity. they have a courageous and determined spirit
the children growing up in nomadic families may not attend school, they sleep and live in the one room with the rest of their family, they have one or two toys and a change of clothes, yet they laugh, play, enjoy the gifts of the natural world, and have spirits that run wild and free
