Coomaditchie United Aboriginal Corporation The Coomaditchie United Aboriginal Corporation is an Aboriginal organisation dedicated to raising the esteem, pride and dignity of Aboriginal people.

The Coomaditchie United Aboriginal Corporation is an Aboriginal organisation dedicated to raising the esteem, pride and dignity of young Aboriginal people in their Aboriginal culture and heritage. The Coomaditchie Artists' Co-operative is a vital part of our organisation, comprised of a group of Aboriginal people who love to paint and create artworks. We are East Coast Saltwater People and our work reflects the colours and images of our environment - the South Coast of New South Wales. In addition to the Artists’ Co-operative, as custodians of the Coomaditchie Lagoon and surrounding area, we provide employment and training for local community members. We are also committed to the regeneration and care of the land around the Coomaditchie Lagoon. Two days of connection wrapped up at Coomaditchie 🤝

The 2026 LCSA Conference brought neighbourhood and community centre workers from across the country and overseas together in Wollongong this week, closing out with an art workshop at Coomaditchie.

Participants from the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families (TFCF), the IFS - International Federation of Settlements and Neighbourhood Centres , and Local Community Services Association members spent time painting and connecting with Coomaditchie's artists and team members as the final stop on the conference program.

It was a fitting way to close a conference built around the work of neighbourhood and community centres as catalysts for local change — bringing people together, building trust, and connecting communities to the services and support they need.

Magari returns to MM Beach

A new sculpture is taking shape at MM Beach, bringing the story of magari (fishing time) back to the Ngaraba-aan Trail.

The original artwork (the last image in this post), created in 2018 by Aunty Lorraine Brown and Aunty Narelle Thomas, told the story of the rich fishing lifestyle and middens along MM Beach, Fisherman's Beach and Hill 60, places the local Aboriginal community was moved away from as the town and heavy industry expanded around them. It was removed in 2023 after weather and erosion damaged the steel.

Rather than reproduce the original, Wollongong City Council has worked with Aunty Lorraine and Aunty Narelle on a new design by Alison Paige, carrying forward the shape of the fish heads and the engravings from the Aunties' original sketches. Ngaramura students were there to witness the installation go in, seeing the story they've grown up with take its new form.

The installation will be officially launched at MM Beach on 21 September at 1pm.

It’s a national celebration of First Nations peoples’ stories, cultures and languages. This year’s theme is Country Is Our Teacher.
