Fifty years young. Thirty years a Hawk.

On 20 June, Mat "Soup" Campbell turns fifty, and we couldn't let the day pass without saying what most Hawkheads already know: there might not be an Illawarra Hawks without him.

524 games. Two championships. One rescue mission that kept this club alive when the lights were about to go out for good.

He debuted at the Snakepit as a teenager, became the quiet engine of our first title, dragged the club back from the brink in 2009, and then helped build the side that brought home the 2024/25 championship from the boardroom.

The No. 32 hangs in the rafters. The club he saved is still flying.

Happy fiftieth, Soup. Wollongong loves you.

39 years ago, Illawarra walked into Newcastle for a Steel City Challenge and put up 133 points. They left with the biggest win in club history.
12 June 1987. Illawarra Hawks 133, Newcastle Falcons 82.

A 51-point win. Still the largest margin of victory this club has ever recorded. Nothing has come within four points of it since.

It capped a seven-game winning streak, the first of two that powered a 20-6 season. One of the best in our history.

Then there's the Ray Borner line that still doesn't add up. 22 points. 14 rebounds. 3 blocks. In 18 minutes shooting 11/15 from the floor. The team shot 59 percent from the field and Newcastle never found an answer.

Gordie McLeod pulled the strings with a game-high 7 assists. Alphonse Hammond did everything asked of him across 37 minutes (13pts, 6asts, 4stl).
Some nights everything clicks. This was one of those nights.
