Ever learning how to 'park' with help from Artie the Australian Kelpie. Herding is the instinct. 🐕
Parking in between learning the overshadowing concepts, using backwards, forwards and head down responses.
Overshadowing in horse training is a behavioral phenomenon where two concurrent stimuli of different strengths are applied, causing the stronger or more salient stimulus to distract the horse and reduce its responsiveness to the weaker one.
An important thing for Ever to learn as she starts to experience more of the world 🌎

This was her first day with me, 5th day today and she's settled beautifully. Taking it all in her stride. Likes helping with 'poo picking' a little too much 🤭

Mirroring the Canter

All my clients for their canter transitions have heard me talking about the 'fencing lunge'.

This is a very good visual for the Mirroring of the horses posture but also their legs 🦵in the canter.
Each photo below is a right canter lead in its positioning. The fencing lunge is obviously very extreme but what it clearly shows is when you take your outside shoulder back for a canter cue the inside of your body precedes the outside. It creates a leading inside postural cue that the horse will mirror. It will put your inside hand forward and maintain an outside rein. It will put inside leg at the girth and outside leg behind the girth (for me these aren't the primary aid, the postural cues is and off that comes the correct hand and leg 'aids').

If you struggle with correct canter leads the 'fencing lunge' positioning is a very good analogy 👏 Also try looking over your outside shoulder to help to get the correct lead. Canter right, look left. This will obviously become very nuanced as the horse gets more confident and balanced on his leads.

What an exciting day! 😍

Today the beautiful 'Ever Graceful JBH' arrived in Suffolk after a long journey down from Preston. I was apprehensive about the whole process for her. Only 2 years old, never left home, never been on a horsebox (except for the training John, her breeder did with her), such a big change. She arrived, cool 😎 as a cucumber 🥒 under the caring and experienced guidance of Matt East Equine Transport (who had put me at ease as to the whole process). Thank you Matt!

Ever has already been Artie desensitised, they're going to be good pals, he practised his 6m voltes around her then left her to settle. Typical, desperate for rain and today was a steady wetting throughout. Hid a few tears from me, the waves of emotion triggered with another mare in my life (didn't see that coming 💧). But for all of us, we're so emotionally invested in these wonderful animals 🦄 that when they leave or when they arrive it proves the joy they create for us.

A massive thank you to Sarah Blake. You were the driving force behind this happening. Organisation is definitely your forte! 🙏✨️

But my biggest THANK YOU goes to Ever Graceful JBH's breeder John Barlow and John Barlow Horses. When we went to see all of his wonderful horses, my question was 'what is your ethos to breeding?' No hesitation in a reply...'I breed for temperament, temperament equals soundness, trainability and success' I loved that answer. Along side very good bloodlines they are beautifully handled young stock with great trainable temperaments. Doesn't get much better! Thank you John for the opportunity 🙏

So Ever, I hope I do you proud, hope I give you the life you deserve. You're a lovely girl. Here's to getting to know each other and starting to walk the road together ❤️

Another example of the mirroring 🪞 effect.

The importance of finding neutral spine. So many riders (historically me too) find themselves with a hollow back from thinking 'sit up tall' and 'shoulders back' are the way to ride.
Your horse will struggle to lift his back into a hollow backed rider. Mirroring their rider by dropping their belly, lengthening their underneath and looking like a hammock. This is exactly what the rider is doing... pushing out their belly, hollowing their back and disengaging their core ( first picture )❌️. Finding neutral spine will enable the horse to engage his core, lift his back and lengthen his top line. ✅️ This spinal correction is important in everyday life. Promoting correct posture and core control.

The mirror 🪞
Glory and I working on fixing the mirror effect. Horses in so many ways will mirror in their body 🐎 what we do in ours 🧍‍♀️
My default has always been to shorten my left side and not have enough structure and therefore stability on this shortened side. Glory mirroring this asymmetric pattern was elongating his right side and shortening his left..... just like me!
Fix the rider, fix the horse.
My fix involved staircase analogies and resistances against the saddle to find the feel and tonal quality needed 💪 Then hey presto 🪄 ✨️ we have a straight Glory.

Crumpet has been so much more willing to go forward and listen to my asks now my hips aren’t blocking her.
My stability feels amazing now I’m not slightly behind with my shoulders/torso.

Artie, Glory and I travelled down to South Buckinghamshire to enjoy more learning of The Ride With Your Mind Techniques with Mary Wanless at the Advanced Teacher Training. So good to see some of the first people I ever trained with over a decade ago and new faces.

First proper stay away in the truck 🚚 Glory travelled like a pro and I think enjoyed his time with Artie and I. We covered some walking miles in between the learning. A lovely common behind the RDA facility we were using, Artie enjoyed running with his new buddy Otis. 🐕

Only negative 😬😳
I forgot my suitcase 😂 My thinking, it can only confirm resilience and the get on with it approach. Luckily I walked to the local shop, bought toiletries and did some hand washing.
(As long as the horse and dog have what they need!)
