El Sett tonight… the incredible biopic of the legendary Oum Kalthoum, brilliantly portrayed by Mona Zaki, had me in tears on more than one occasion.

What a stunning film. I was completely captivated for the entire 165 minutes. Beautifully filmed, beautifully acted, and deeply moving.

The Oum Kalthoum Masterclass we did last year touched on so many important aspects of her life and artistic journey. I’m so grateful we had that experience, because watching those moments brought to life on screen so magnificently gave me goosebumps. It felt as though so many of the stories, challenges, triumphs, and defining moments we had discussed were unfolding right before my eyes.

A truly powerful tribute to the woman who became Oum Kalthoum, not just a singer, but a cultural icon whose legacy continues to resonate generations later.

SWEET SPOTLIGHT…..More Than Just a Solo Performance.

One of the most unique segments of the Big Egyptian Day Out is our Sweet Spotlight program.

Sweet Spotlight gives dancers a rare opportunity to perform with the Sydney Arabic Music Ensemble, receive constructive feedback from a panel of industry professionals, and truly immerse themselves in the art of performing to live music.

This is not simply a case of getting up, performing a solo, having your video taken and then heading home.

This segment has been specifically designed with dancer development in mind.

Each participant performs the same piece twice with the live band. Following the first performance, dancers receive feedback and observations from the panel before returning to the stage to immediately apply what they’ve learned in their second performance.

It’s a powerful experience.

Not only does it give dancers practical tools and insights, it also beautifully demonstrates one of the most important aspects of working with live music that no two performances are ever exactly the same. The music shifts, evolves and breathes, and so must the dancer.

Over the years I have worked hard to create a professional environment that supports learning and growth. Professional musicians. Professional sound. A stage. Experienced artists and educators who genuinely want to support your journey.

This is far more than an “Instagrammable opportunity.”

It’s an opportunity to step outside your comfort zone, develop your skills, receive meaningful feedback, and gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between dancer and musician.

Feedback is one of the most valuable tools we have as artists. It helps us learn, reflect, grow, and see the bigger picture beyond what we can observe ourselves.

With many Sweet Spotlight places already filled, I have opened a second round of opportunities at this year’s Big Egyptian Day Out to allow more dancers to step into the spotlight in a supportive educational environment without the pressures of “putting on a show.”

This is a rare opportunity to learn, experiment, grow and connect through live music.

A truly unique experience.

One of the greatest gifts of my dance career has been the opportunity to work with incredible live musicians.

Not musicians who simply “play for dancers,” but artists who are educators, facilitators and cultural bearers. Artists who generously share their knowledge, lineage, musical understanding, traditions, stories and decades of experience working alongside dancers.

I have been fortunate to learn from many of these musicians since I was a 15-year-old dancer taking my very first steps into the world of live Arabic music. Together we have shared countless rehearsals, performances, conversations, triumphs, challenges, laughs and unforgettable moments that have shaped not only my dance, but the way I understand music, culture and collaboration.

This is why live music has always been at the heart of my work.

At Big Egyptian Day Out, our musicians are not sitting at the side of the room providing background music. They are active facilitators in the learning process. They teach, explain, demonstrate, answer questions and help dancers gain a deeper understanding of the music they are dancing to.

The result is a truly immersive experience where dance, music and culture come together in a way that simply cannot be replicated.

This July, as we present our final live music intensive at Amera’s Palace, I feel incredibly privileged to share not only my own knowledge, experiences and stories, but also the wisdom of the remarkable artists who have been part of this journey for so many years.

Join us for a full day of exceptional music, inspiration, creativity, learning, connection and celebration.

I would love to share this experience with you.

A little unusual.

Step 1: We drill the footwork, hear the timing.

9/8 muwashahat footwork to Nine Inch Nails. For the NIN fans in class, this combo helped put enjoyment into footwork.

Step 2 (next week): Replace 🎶 with Muwashahat classics to feel, then polish, blend, and soften.

International dance festivals are such a special part of a dancer’s journey. They remind you how deeply dance connects us, beyond language, beyond borders.

So grateful to reconnect with Kazafy after more than 20 years from the Nile Group to Sydney in 2019, and now Korea. Three countries later, and it still feels like no time has passed.

Also so special to reunite with artists from years gone by like Mercedes Nieto (first seeing her dance 20years ago at Nile Group) and then in Brisbane in 2010, and finally meeting Shahrzad in person after working together online in 2020 for Kan Zaman Festival.
And just as importantly, meeting and connecting with inspiring artists like Vaagn, who reminded me that a true passion for dance comes from deep within, shaped by your psychology and the way you live your life.

As dance keeps evolving, these connections remain. They’re the moments that stay with you, beyond the choreography, glitz and glamour.

Thank you to Mabrouk Festival for creating and continuing this pathway.

Having my own dance space at home feels like such a luxury , I’m grateful for it every single day… but it’s the little extras my hubby adds that really make it shine. Hello disco ball 🪩

One of my private students, who was usually a bit shy had the sweetest surprise when I dimmed the lights and turned on the disco vibes. Instantly, everything changed. She was lighter, happier, more relaxed… like she found a whole new version of herself.

At the end of the lesson she said, “Wow, you have everything.” I couldn’t help but laugh and said, “Well… it also doubles as my daughter’s birthday party room!”

Who knew a disco ball could work that kind of magic?
