Last Sunday a handful of club members trekked out to West Talbot and indulged in a spot of field archery at the annual Interclub day put on by the York and Districts Archery Club. It was perfect weather, and the bush was very pleasant to wander through. We all put in some miles though! We worked up an appetite and enjoyed an ample lunch, and then were back into it for the afternoon session. And of course there was the dreaded hollow log to shoot through ๐Ÿ˜ฒ All in all it was a great day - we even got a bit of a jet flyover from the Beverley Airshow! Much thanks to the YDAC for the invite, and we look forward to the next one.

In the meantime normal service resumes at Wickepin, with archery every Saturday at 9.00am ๐Ÿน ๐ŸŽฏ

First up, we will be shooting this Saturday, April 4 - Easter Saturday ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿ‡

However there will NOT be a shoot on Saturday the 11th, because the York & Districts Archery Club will be having their annual Interclub Shoot. They have a Field Archery course out near Talbot West. It's a great weekend, and there is camping and meals available as well. It's a great way to meet fellow archers from other clubs, go for a wander in the bush, and play hide and seek with some errant arrows ๐Ÿ˜†

So make a booking, take the family, and we might see a whole bunch of you there ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿน ๐ŸŒณ

There seems to be a gathering move amongst our members to try out barebow archery. It really is a different form of archery when it's just you, the bow, the arrow, the target; and the brain desperately trying to connect that all together with no artificial aids! Something that archers could start to look at is maybe a dedicated bow or two for barebow shooting. They can be had in take-down or single piece like any other bow, but are often simpler and more attuned to their use. They can be centreshot or not, and particularly if they are one piece, can have much more variety in their style and design. A lot of these bows can be had for less than $200. So have a look online and see what appeals to you, and there are plenty of videos on Youtube where you can see them in action.
Here are a few samples below - enjoy ๐Ÿน ๐ŸŽฏ

Just a quick tutorial on doing a knot on the string as a nock. A nocking point doesn't have to be some elaborate process involving precious metals, tools, and fancy knot work. Set up a bit of cord and do some practice runs - you might be surprised at what you can achieve ๐Ÿน

Hi all, we are back to shooting weekly at Wickepin this Saturday Jan. 17, 9.00am. Temperature should be no more than a comfortable 30C, so a nice way to start the season. For those of you who may be feeling a bit rusty from the break, we have a little inspiration for you. Below is a video that neatly sums up the shot process of barebow shooting in one neat six and a half minute package. And don't worry, there is plenty relevant to sight shooting as well ๐Ÿ™‚
Look forward to seeing you all at the range, and in the meantime, keep flinging arrows ๐Ÿน

Just a little something different to see out the year. Did you know that the good folk of Bhutan are totally nuts about their archery?!? Even more than we are about cricket and footy? And did you know that the biggest Bhutanese community outside of Bhutan is here in Perth? Go figure - it can't be because of our mountains! But there you go.
Traditionally Bhutan archery uses a bamboo bow made of two pieces bound in the middle. They shoot small targets at 145m, and their contests include much singing, dancing, banter, and a little bit of drinking. Their whole archery scene is a celebration of their culture, of family, of who they are and where they came from.
Modernization has crept in and the traditional bamboo bow has been largely replaced by the compound bow. However strict caveats apply - no release aids, and only basic recurve sights or barebow. But the art of the archery and the culture that surrounds it continues.
The article below is a snapshot of the Bhutanese community here in WA, and how their archery binds them together. Who knows, maybe we should reach out and share our archery with them; just for archery's sake and the fun that goes with it. Food for thought.
In the meantime, all the best for the New Year. May your arrows fly true ๐Ÿน

Transitioning from "the happiest nation on earth" to a fast-paced Western society is not without its challenges for Perth's booming Bhutanese population, some of whom have taken up archery to improve their mental health.

Well that's it for the year! We had our Christmas shoot back on the 13th, and just as well that we did! A truck accident on the Narrogin/Wickepin Rd last Saturday morning cut Wickepin off from anywhere west, so no archery that day! However the Christmas shoot was well attended, and the morning tea spread was more than ample, with lots of delicious food. Thank you to everyone who made it happen.
All the best to everyone over the Christmas period, and we look forward to the New Year. We will be back to shooting weekly at Wickepin on Saturday Jan. 17, 9.00am. Look forward to seeing you all then, and in the meantime, keep flinging arrows ๐Ÿน

The weather was perfect for the "Come & Try" at Popo last Sunday. A good crowd turned up and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Congratulations to Chantelle and Jeff on winning this year's Christmas hampers.
We are back to Saturday morning shoots at Wickepin, starting at 9.00am. And don't forget the Christmas shoot on December 13.
See you all on the range ๐Ÿน ๐ŸŽฏ

We are at that time of the year where we switch from our winter schedule to our summer schedule. Saturday Nov. 22 will be the last afternoon shoot for the year. There will be no Saturday shoot at Wickepin on Nov. 29th as we are doing a Sunday morning shoot at Popanyinning Oval, Nov. 30. We will start our Saturday morning shoots at 9.00am at Wickepin on Dec. 6, then Dec. 13, which is our Christmas shoot, and Dec. 20. We then take a break over Christmas and the New Year and start the 2026 year Jan. 17, Saturday morning, at 9.00am. Hope to see you all at the shoots.
