Congratulations – REGION 3 MEN’S COUNTRY ROUND ROBIN CHAMPIONS.
What a fantastic achievement to represent Region 3 and claim the Championship title. Well done to every member of the team and the support crew – Team Managers and the Selectors. You should all be very proud of this victory; going through the event undefeated with six wins and a draw. Can’t do much better than that to confirm Region 3 is the best of all 8 Country Regions. A brilliant performance by every rink who all contributed throughout the week in this significant victory.

Today at 1300 hours twenty six members and guests attended the Club Opening for the new Season.

President Joe Gledhill warmly welcomed members and our guests from the Whyalla Bowls Club. In his opening address he reported on recent volunteer activities at the club which had all helped to give our club a fresher look and make it more welcoming. Player numbers for the season were also looking good and the club was confident it can field two first division Saturday teams and a ladies side on Thursdays.

Various members were thanked for their contribution and Joe was looking to the new season with much confidence.

Players took to the green to witness Club Champions Ann Buckley roll the first jack, ably spotted by club stalwart Peter Row, before current mens Club Champ Chris Schrapel rolled the first bowl .

Games of two bowl triples and fours commenced and continued in ideal conditions till 3.30pm.

Awaiting the players in the clubrooms was a very enticing array of savoury and sweet dishes that made Jack Buckley’s day and this correspondent lost count of the number of times he visited the table to fill his plate. Indeed a couple of thirsty golfers dropped in at this time and also helped to clean up the few scraps that were left. Members were very generous with the offerings they brought along to share.

Willing workers then pitched in to tidy up the dishes and reset the club for the next event of which there is a few this week.

Wednesday 11 the club will host the wake after Jack Schrapels funeral.

Thursday is the Clubs first Cosmopolitan Tournament for the Season with 48 players duking it out for the $1000 prize money on offer kindly sponsored by Bridgetown Tyre Services and McLeod Automotive Services. Many thanks to Dene and Trudy Mintern who have been managing this event and ensuring it will be a success.

Friday Scroungers is on again starting at 4.00pm with Silvern Guardian Services providing prize money for this event. Please feel free to bring guests along to these nights if you have some one who is interested. It is also a great opportunity to socialise with your fellow club mates and get some competitive practice.

Thanks to those who have volunteered to help out this week to make all of these events go ahead smoothly.

The weather this week has been trying to say the least and yesterday the wind relented before it started to shower and looked like putting a damper on our first Come and Try Scroungers Night for September.

Seventeen members and visitors made the evening and on cue the rain retreated and the beautifully prepared green by Chris rolled extremely well. Some good skills were on display across the rinks of triples and players all got an opportunity to practice some mental arithmetic as the tallied their scores. Scroungers or Crazy Singles as some call it is a great game for practicing draw bowls if you wish to maximise your scoring opportunities.

After 9 ends the parties moved to the clubhouse for a light supper prepared by Sue Gledhill and friends and enjoying a refreshment of choice with the others present.

Silvern Guardian Security Services of 70 Essington Lewis Avenue, Whyalla sponsored the prize money for the evening and President Joe was the lucky winner of the $50.00 card draw.

Our guests for the night were Steve and Cheryl Main .

President Joe wishes to thank Chris, Butch, Peter and Bill for preparing the greens for the night and those members who made it along. Our Ladies who gave our club rooms a much needed spruce on Thursday are also thanked for their efforts in spring cleaning our club space.

By 1845 the club closed as members headed off to watch the footy finals.

Scroungers is on again next Friday at 4.00pm and all members are encouraged to come along and bring a friend to experience playing our great game.
