Cuttlefish Season Update – Whyalla

Following recent discussions between industry, council, and government, an official position has now been confirmed regarding the 2026 cuttlefish season.

It’s been widely reported and agreed that cuttlefish numbers at Stony Point are minimal to significantly lower than in recent years. While the exact cause, and the chance of a late arrival, remains uncertain, there is strong agreement across all groups that the current population should be given the best chance to recover without disturbance. As a result, the promotion of cuttlefish tours will be suspended, subject to the release of further government survey data.

The State Government will also implement a 90-day exclusion zone from Black Point to Stony Point, restricting in-water activities such as snorkelling, diving, and vessel anchoring within the main breeding area.

This decision has not been taken lightly. It reflects a shared priority — protecting this unique and internationally recognised natural event for future seasons.

We understand this is disappointing news, particularly for those who had planned to visit or are directly impacted. Our thoughts are with everyone in the local tourism and small business community feeling the effects.

Importantly, Whyalla still has a great deal to offer. On-land Cuttlefest events will continue, along with a range of experiences, landscapes, and stories that make this region well worth the trip.

Important Update – 2026 Giant Cuttlefish Season

After a late start to winter, with warmer than usual water temperatures persisting into early June, we have continued to monitor the Giant Cuttlefish aggregation area near Point Lowly on a daily basis, looking for signs of the annual migration.

Unfortunately, those signs have not eventuated.

With water temperatures now approaching 13°C, and after extensive surveys of the reef by both scuba divers and our glass bottom boat, we can confidently say that there are next to no Giant Cuttlefish present on Cuttlefish Reef near Point Lowly.

In an effort to provide as much notice as possible for visitors planning to travel during the upcoming school holidays, Cuttys Tours and Why Dive have made the difficult decision to cancel "Our" 2026 Giant Cuttlefish season.

As a result, we will not be offering guided tours or equipment hire over the next two months.

We strongly encourage people to trust that what we are reporting is an accurate reflection of the current situation and ask that visitors do not travel to the reef this season. We believe the few remaining animals should be left undisturbed to do what they need to do to survive, without further human interference.

All existing bookings will be cancelled and all deposits refunded by the end of next week.

We know this news will be disappointing for many people. We will continue to share information on these pages about the current situation, what may have contributed to it, and any future developments relating to the Giant Cuttlefish aggregation, so that everyone can remain informed.

🦑 CUTTLEFISH UPDATE #1

The question we're being asked most often right now...

"Are the giant cuttlefish here yet?"

The short answer? Not in huge numbers just yet.

The annual migration builds over time, with numbers gradually increasing as conditions become right for breeding. While we're starting to spot a few, we're still waiting for the main event.

The good news? The water is crystal clear, the coastline is stunning and every trip out still offers the chance to encounter some incredible marine life.

We'll continue sharing regular updates as the season unfolds, so stay tuned and follow along as we keep watch on one of nature's most spectacular events.
