Charlestown Azzurri FC is a football (soccer) club based in Highfields, a suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales. Formally known as Azzurri FC, the club merged with local neighbours Charlestown United in order to try and meet the requirements of the 2009 NBN State League. The merger and subsequent evolution of the club, resulted in the forming a new entity called Charlestown Azzurri. Unfortunately,
this merger, and qualifying for the 1st Grade Grand Final in the 2008 season was not enough to satisfy NNSW football. Azzurri FC were relegated to the New FM 1st Division for 2009 and set about taking every trophy on offer in this competition. The club officailly changed their name to Charlestown City Blues FC in 2010 and performed again successfully finishing the regular season 2nd and winning the GF. In 2011, CCB again competed in the NEWFM Division where then1st team secured the Minor and Major Premierships in both 1st Grade and Under 19's. The under 23's finished the season strongly to finish 4th and went on to win the Grand Final. As a result on the minor premiership in first grade, Charlestown City Blues were granted promotion to the NBN League for the 2012 season. During this year the first grade qualifying for the final series on their first attempt. In 2013, the club was awarded NNSW vlub of the year honours at the awards night for displaying a strong administrative position dedicated to its longevity despite set backs of previous years. With the recent merger and set up of the premier competition structure, Azzurri is proud to display this award for all the hard work done my volunteers and the community.
2014 saw the Azzurri accepted into the NPL set-up having again displayed a dedication to reaching high standards off the park as well as on. This season, the 1st grade again qualified for the final series being beaten by the eventual GF winners. In 2018, the first grade qualified for the national round of 32 teams in the FFA cup which saw the team travel to Melbourne and face Heidelberg, a team widely regarded as the best non-professional side in the country. Unfortunately on this occasion, with a number of senior players missing a young and enthusiastic side were beaten 2-1 in a very brave and spirited display, gaining the respect of our highly regarded opponents.
2020 saw the 1st team again return to the final series with 1st team going 120 minutes with the previous years premiers Maitland before bowing out in the cruellest of circumstances, penalty shoot out.
