The Weevils hosted the Harden Devils at West Wyalong on Saturday for Ladies’ Day, with a good crowd around the ground and a great feel around the club.
West Wyalong came out firing and controlled the opening five minutes with smart ball movement and good composure, catching the Devils a little off guard early. After earning a penalty five metres out, Myles Harland wasted no time, taking a quick tap and crashing over for the opening try. The conversion was unsuccessful, but it was a strong start from the Weevils and gave the home crowd plenty to cheer about.
From there, Harden settled themselves and began to find their rhythm on the wet pitch. They replied with a try of their own not long after, and once they found their feet, they showed why they are sitting at the top of the ladder and are considered one of the competition favourites. The Devils played hard, fast rugby, spreading the ball wide to a well-drilled backline that showed plenty of discipline, sharp passing and fancy footwork.
Harden ran in four tries in the first half, with three of them converted, taking control of the scoreboard before the break.
One of the biggest highlights for the Weevils on the day was their work at scrum time. When it came to the front-row headbutting contest and the good old-fashioned goat-ramming sessions, Harden were left searching for answers. The Weevils pack gave the Devils plenty to think about, showing a huge improvement from the last time these two sides met.
No doubt the Harden forward pack will be adding a few extra scrum drills to training this week.
The second half continued in a similar fashion, with the Weevils’ defence lapsing at times and fatigue starting to creep in. A few injuries in the front row meant the big boys had to dig deep, shuffle around and keep turning up in the tough stuff, even when the legs were running on fumes.
Harden’s defence was hard to crack, but the Weevils were eventually rewarded. Myles Harland showed great vision close to the line, throwing a wide ball out to Josh Davis, who crossed for his second try of the season. With the conversion added, it was a good reward for effort and a reminder that when West Wyalong holds the ball and backs their shape, they can still cause damage.
There is plenty for the Weevils to take away from the game. Over the past few weeks, the defence has been one of the real positives, but this week it seemed to lapse at times. Ball-handling errors also proved costly, and Harden were good enough to capitalise whenever they were given the chance.
The Devils ran in another four tries in the second half, with all four converted, pushing the final score out to 54–12. It was a tough, physical game, and there will be plenty of sore bodies after that one. But while the scoreboard blew out, it didn’t fully reflect the physicality of the contest or the effort the Weevils had to keep turning up against one of the benchmark sides in the competition.
There is plenty to think about heading into next week’s clash with Temora: where the Weevils are at, what needs tightening up, and what areas can be sharpened before another big test.
