Despite the torrential rain during the week the Waterloo pitch was prepared to relative perfection and probably played as well as it ever has. IZs batted first and lost an early one in Balesy’s first of nine very tight overs. The opener was joined by a classy looking number three and together they set about building the innings but with Balesy from one end and Beatts and Matt bowling tight lines from the other, we kept the run rate in check. Paddo was sharp in the field although a few tough chances were grassed that would have had them in real trouble. At drinks they were just over 50 off 18. The openers started to find a few gaps after drinks but never really got away from us. Tim came on for a couple of cameo overs and broke the partnership with a well disguised fully that was skied to mid-off. He also had the other opener caught on the boundary but this fully was deemed a no-ball. Browny came into the attack from the other end with immediate effect and had a test batsman (admittedly only a Kiwi) neatly stumped by Decca. With Browny and Sam working in tandem and tight fielding all day, wickets fell steadily and we restricted them to 152 in a pretty good display in the field.

We felt the target was very achievable given the relative strength of our line up but Decca uncharacteristically was back in the shed very early. Browny joined Sam and we were scoring at 3 an over with the target well in our control. But after a solid start Sam fell, quickly followed by Matt and at drinks we were 3 down for 56. Kerr and Browny upped the rate for a few overs but after getting a start, a rash shot by the captain put more pressure on the rest of the order. Browny continued to keep things ticking along but we remained 20 runs behind the game and he was receiving little support from anyone else. Beatts went, again after getting a start. IZs bowled well all day, with very few loose deliveries and, as scoreboard pressure started to mount, Browny tried to respond but fell for a well-made 46. The remaining task was too much for Scribbo and Johnny and we fell 20-odd runs short in an enjoyable day.

Paddo v Barker Old Boys 29th November

Prior to play starting the teams gathered on the pitch and remembered Phil Hughes with a few words from one of the BOBs.
Fraze then proceeded to bowl a bouncer first ball of the innngs!

Once again the wicket was under done and just not hard enough. This made for difficult batting with extremely variable bounce. I will have a quiet word with the groundsman….
Fraze picked up 3 quickly and they were on the ropes. But one of theirs commenced a solid fightback with some strong driving through mid wicket and straight. Ando was unlucky as he drew an edge from this fellow which was grassed. But some good catches were held during the day by Pete, Beatts, Browny and Ando. Tyler bowled a great line for a tidy spell. Louis Pepper bowled with zip before tiring way too soon for a man of his age, Pete got three quickly before also pulling up a little gingerly. Ozzie, as always, drew chances with some success. The young legs of Sam Furlong, Louis and super sub Johnny Holder were appreciated in the field. They finished with 160 – but probably 20 more than they should have got.

We struggled in the run chase from the beginning. Ackers went early then, Sammy and I could not get going. Sam started to get goingsoon after I departed but then we lost him and Beatts on consecutive balls. Browny started to push the score along to give us the slightest sniff of a chance but fell to a catch in the deep and our faint hopes faded. We ended up with 120 odd from our 35.

The usual story, we need to be just a little bit tighter when we bowl, and we need to keep the score ticking over early in our batting innings to take the pressure off the back end.

But it was another enjoyable day topped off with a few beers under the fig trees compliments of Beatts.

And then it was off to the Malabar RSL to see Ando’s band “Blind Mullet”…..

Gents,

We were winners in all aspects of the game except the scoreboard on Saturday.

Sent in by Yarralla on a good deck at Goddard Park we were immediately under pressure losing two early wickets.
But pinned down by a good attack we steadied the ship, didn’t panic and fought back into the game.
Browny led the rear-guard action first with dogged defence and then controlled and calculated aggression to be the backbone of the innings.
With assistance along the way from myself, Eion and Beatts we reached 8 for 163. A great fightback and a very competitive score.

Balesy and Beatts took the new ball.
We knew Beatts was good for only a few but he stuck it to them for a good short spell.
James was on song from the beginning and even better when the brains trust switched him to the other end.
Again Browny then entered the fray and asked all sorts of questions of the Yarralla batsmen.
We weren’t getting as many wickets as we wanted but neither were they getting the runs.
Unfortunately with 15 overs to go two of ours had to leave to make it to pre-arranged functions.
The 9 remaining men fought like the Spartans at Thermopylae! We knew we were up against it but all put in right to the end.
Aron and James Bales were fiendishly committed in the outfield and chased every ball that came anywhere near them with conviction.
Even Eion’s dad who filled in to make up the original eleven chased everything like he was a teenager. He will be sore today!
We bowled smart and fielded well and gave it a great crack but it was not enough. They passed us in the 33rd over.
But we left the field like winners. We had pushed them hard and they knew it.
Well done Paddo.

This coming weekend the 25th of October we are back at Waterloo and have secured a game against Reg Bartley.
If you are available please let Jamie know as I think we have had a few withdrawals from the team listed below.

A rusty start to the season. Saturday 12th October

We came second to the Reg Bartley XI on the weekend but the game was not without some promising features.
The outfield at Waterloo was nowhere near as bad as the groundsman had led me to believe and by the time we get back on it in two weeks it should be fine.
The wicket was a bit crumbly in places which led to uneven bounce, but with a bit of rolling it will play OK.

We had three debutants, Aron Patel, Anthony Brown And Jon Raju. All went well. Aron went after one a bit early but was otherwise watchful and will soon conquer the vagaries of the Waterloo wicket. Brownie had a big game, batted well at three, was especially strong through mid wicket and looked like he had a much bigger score in him. He then came on to bowl a long and testing spell of left arm orthodox. We can build a game around this sort of bowling! Jon held our innings together and drove beautifully once he got the pace of the track.

We scored 143. We should have scored a little more after being 2 for 65 at the half way mark but they bowled very good lines all day and we never got on top of the bowling.

They passed us 7 down with overs to spare but we never felt out of the match and towards the end felt we had got into the tail, but we just didn’t have the runs to put the pressure on them. Another 25 runs and it would have been a very close game.

And the weather was fabulous!

We retired to the Grosvenor for some welcome beers.

This coming weekend is the first of five “Jack Pace Shield” competition games. Every second week up to Christmas will be a JPS game. In the new year the top 8 teams go into a knockout.
We are still a few players short this weekend so if you can play let Jamie know asap.

Cheers
