SOUTHS REDBACKS WOMEN
Round 7 Match Report
The Souths Redbacks Women took on the Toowoomba Tigers on the weekend, showing plenty of determination and resilience despite going down 15.6 (96) to 3.2 (20).
The Redbacks were challenged from the outset by a strong Tigers team, but they refused to take a backward step. The visitors opened their account in the first quarter with a goal and a behind, competing hard around the contest and trailing 24-7 at the first break.
The second quarter saw the Redbacks continue to battle fiercely, adding another major to their tally. While the Tigers were able to build on their lead, the Redbacks continued to apply pressure and create opportunities, heading into half-time trailing 43-13.
The Tigers gained momentum in the third quarter, but the Redbacks never stopped working. Strong defensive efforts and a willingness to keep contesting every ball ensured the side remained committed despite the scoreboard pressure, with the Tigers leading 75-13 at the final break.
To their credit, the Redbacks finished the game with plenty of spirit. The side added a goal and a behind in the final quarter, rewarding their persistence and effort. The team continued to support one another and compete right until the final siren, eventually finishing with 3.2 (20).
While the result didn’t go their way, there were plenty of positives to take from the performance. The Redbacks showed grit, determination, and a willingness to keep fighting throughout all four quarters against a quality Toowoomba Tigers side.
The Souths Redbacks Women have a well-earned bye next weekend and will use the opportunity to refresh before returning to action in round 9.
Criterion Hotel Warwick Redbacks Men’s Round 7 Match Report
Ben Brooks Memorial Cup 2026
Today was about much more than football.
The annual Ben Brooks Memorial Cup gives both the Warwick Redbacks and South Burnett Saints the opportunity to honour and remember Ben Brooks, a young man who showed incredible courage throughout his battle with a serious illness and throughout his football journey.
This year’s occasion was especially emotional following the recent passing of Ben’s father, Darryl. Darryl was a passionate supporter of both clubs and would have been incredibly proud to see the way the football community came together once again to celebrate Ben’s Day.
With only 14 Redbacks making the long trip to Kingaroy, a huge thank you goes to Scott and Ben, who pulled on the Redbacks guernsey to ensure we could take 16 players onto the field against a Saints side with 17.
Despite the challenge, the Redbacks were outstanding in the opening half and trailed by just a goal at the main break after one of the club’s grittiest efforts of the season.
Kobee Lee set the tone early with enormous tackling pressure and was rewarded with a brilliant goal. Not to be outdone, his father Danny also made the most of his opportunity and converted a major of his own.
Connor Lloyd was simply relentless throughout the day. His clearance work, pressure around the contest, and willingness to compete never wavered while also adding a long set-shot goal to the scoreboard. Connor was deservedly awarded the Players’ Player award.
Jack Drewery continued his outstanding season, producing a huge effort across four quarters. His repeat efforts in the final term were a highlight and he capped off his performance with a classy snap goal. Jack’s determination, resilience, and team-first attitude saw him awarded the prestigious Ben Brooks Medal, a fitting recognition of the spirit Benny embodied.
The goal of the day belonged to Luke Giacca, who burst from the centre square and launched a stunning goal from beyond 50 metres. Luke, Connor, Jack, and Rixo all spent the day battling through the midfield and left absolutely nothing in the tank.
Down back, Augustus MacDade was outstanding, repeatedly repelling Saints attacks and providing plenty of drive from defence. Alongside him, Jack Fletcher competed courageously all day and was deservedly awarded Best Player by the opposition.
Unfortunately, the game became even more difficult when Kobee Lee was forced from the field with injury during the third quarter, leaving the Redbacks with just 15 players against 17 for the remainder of the contest.
While the Saints eventually ran away with the game, the scoreboard doesn’t tell the full story of the effort shown by every player who wore the Redbacks guernsey today. To be just one goal down at half-time while outnumbered was a remarkable effort and a reflection of the character within this group.
A massive thank you to our volunteers Dave, Clarkey, and Jake for making the three-hour trip and supporting the club, along with all of our supporters who travelled to Kingaroy and helped make the day so special.
Most importantly, thank you to everyone involved in honouring Ben and Darryl Brooks. Their legacy continues to bring our football communities together each year.
Final Score
