K’gari Cruisin’

21/3 - Fraser Island to Hervey Bay

We drove back down the beach, soaking in those final stretches of sand and sea. On the way, we pulled into Champagne Pools for a quick swim—floating in the natural pools while the waves crashed over the rocks one last time.
After that, it was time to head off the island. We waited about an hour for the barge, making the most of it with a relaxed lunch by the water—no rush, just letting the trip wind down naturally.
Back on the mainland, the first stop was giving the car a well-earned wash after days of sand, salt, and adventure. Then we hit the road and drove to Hervey Bay, easing back into reality after an unforgettable time on K’gari.

K’gari Cruisin’

Day 5 on Fraser Island - 20/3

After saying goodbye to Dave & Fiona, we made our way back toward civilisation via Kingfisher Bay, where the dense bush opens up to calm waters and jetty views—a bit of a contrast after the rugged beach runs and remote northern tracks. It felt like easing back into the world after days off-grid.

Not far from there, we stopped in at Lake Allom, a quieter, lesser-known gem. The dark, tea-tree stained water reflects the surrounding forest perfectly, and if you’re lucky, you’ll spot turtles gliding just beneath the surface. Peaceful, still, and a totally different vibe to the bright blues of Lake McKenzie.

We spent our final night at K'gari Campground, soaking up the last bit of island life— one more night under the stars, and that feeling of not quite wanting it to end.

This trip was put together by Ian and Fran and what an awesome job they did.

Ian put the narrative together.

Well another trip into the mountains.

Our base cramp was at Jerusalem Creek, on Lake Eildon.

Next morning we drove up through the hills to Barwell Plains track where a massive fallen mountain ash stopped progress. It was too big even for the trusty recip saw so we "n" turned and took Torbrek track instead.

We proceeded steeply up through pristine alpine ash that hadn't been disturbed by fire or forestry. We stopped at Snobs Creek Falls where an impressive volume of water launched off rocks framed by serene tree
ferns.

We proceeded up to Morris lookout with expansive views over the valley.

Unfortunately one of our compatriots suffered a broken cv and as we "never leave a marine behind " we decided to make sure he got out .

We headed back to camp for some refreshments 🍸 and a camp fire where some fire walking was had.

All in all a good trip if not cut short.

Just have to go back I suppose….

I was the first to arrive at Jerusalem Creek and I had my rather large Van, which Vic Parks said was ok to get to camp two and park there !!

Well I certainly wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. The track down was dirt and rough as.

No damage incurred but I was lucky.

Then it was impossible for me to get into my allocated park, so I chose the easiest one.

Left Beechworth and heading to Jerusalem Creek, Eildon.

Going through Yark I noticed the devastation that the recent fires caused, so I stopped at a little Cafe.

Whilst there I met a team of Blaze aid people who were volunteering their time to help rebuild farmers fences

Day 4 on Fraser Island - 19/3

A beautiful drive through the rainforest led us to one of nature’s hidden gems.

Surrounded by lush tropical bush, we made our way to Lake Garawongera—one of the island’s quieter, more untouched spots.
Tucked away from the main tracks, it felt worlds apart from the more popular lakes. The water sat still and dark, reflecting the dense forest around it, giving the whole place a calm, almost mysterious feel. No crowds, no noise—just raw K’gari wilderness.

It was the kind of place that makes you slow down, take it all in, and realise just how much of the island remains wild and undiscovered.
