Illawarra Dragon Boat Club

Illawarra Dragon Boat Club The Illawarra Dragon Boat Club is for anyone who wants to paddle for fun, fitness or competiton. It's a very friendly environment so why not come and try.

The Illawarra Dragon Boat is located in the Illawarra, in NSW, Australia. The area includes the Wollongong, Kiama and Shellharbour regions. We paddle on the beautiful Lake Illawarra, which is about 100km south of Sydney. The Illawarra Dragon Boat Club invites men and women of all ages and fitness levels, to join us either socially or competitively. Illawarra Dragon Boat Club started in 2009. It gr

ew out of the Illawarra Dragons Abreast which was a local dragon boat club for Breast Cancer survivors and supporters. In 2009, a group of very dedicated members realised that the club could grow from strength to strength if it was incorporated and with the encouragement of Dragon Boats NSW, a new club was formed that everyone in the Ilawarra can join

The club has grown in numbers, has acquired a new boat and has also increased the number of training days from one a week in summer to three times a week, all year round. This has been a huge bonus for the members of the Illawarra Dragons Abreast, who can now train more regularly and more often with many new friendsThe Illawarra Club is now competing regularly in regattas throughour NSW. Dragon boating is the world's fastest growing team sport. It involves 20 paddlers, 2 abreast in a long boat. There is a sweep at the back who steers the boat and a drummer at the front who keeps the paddlers in time. We also have a coach for training days. Nothing is nicer than an early morning paddle with the watchful pelicans and the graceful black swans as company, or perhaps it is a late afternoon paddle with the sun setting behind the mountains

IDBC are sending our boat “Light of the Lake” north to support a new team in the Rozelle Bay area of Sydney. Light of the Lake was delivered to the Illawarra Rowing Shed in 2006 following a series of fundraising events by Dragons Abreast Illawarra. She was regularly seen on the lake for training sessions, she also helped out at Come and Trys and Seniors Week activities. Our Pink boat arrived in 2012, DBNSW used both the boats for a States Juniors training weekend. Our champion boat arrived in 2016 and with her arrival Light of the Lake became the reserve boat only used if one of the other boats was out of action. It’s good to know that Light of the Lake will be back in action, supporting a new crew and this great sport.
