Then vs Now - The Cosmetics Boycott is intact!
I came across this photo just now, and I remember this occasion well. It was the 2014 Local Business Awards Night for the Waroona Districts Chamber of Commerce, where I spent a few years leading the group and engaging the local business community. In this photo, I was announcing the winners of the awards.
The funny thing is, what stands out to me the most looking at this photo from 2014 has nothing to do with the actual event. It's the makeup. I recall this specific moment in time as being the very last time I ever wore makeup. Straight after this, I had an epiphany about the whole cosmetic industry and swore to never touch cosmetics again. I am beautiful exactly as I am, no embellishments required.
In this epiphany, I clearly saw the detrimental impact that the cosmetic industry was having on the self esteem of women and girls everywhere. I remember going camping one time with some friends, one of the guys brought along his new girlfriend - who would not leave the tent without a full face of makeup. There's something deeply concerning about that.
In this day of unsustainable consumerism, surely the cosmetic industry has a lot to answer for. Don't even get me started on the fashion industry. If we can exist - entirely and completely successfully - without relying on a single image-enhancing consumable cosmetic product, and just be completely happy being our natural selves, can you imagine how many global things that would shift? Could we make the value proposition of an entire $700 Billion industry entirely redundant with that one fact? I actually think we can.
For the past 12 years, I have not applied a single cosmetic product to my face. I have not used any creams, foundations, powders, lipstick, eyeliner, mascara - nothing. I have not used any hair products for about 8-9 years (I do a once-a-month apple cider vinegar rinse), and my hairdresser loves the condition of my hair.
Imagine the money I have saved by not buying cosmetics for 12 years. Imagine the reduction of plastic waste. Imagine the boost to my confidence and sense of self-worth from not relying on external products, but developing these from within.
I like knowing that my skin is clear because I have a clean diet and a healthy lifestyle. I just don't ever need to put anything on my skin, and I'm proud to say that I look like this at 51 years of age. Don't get me wrong, I'm still vain enough to admire my own reflection. I just don't need cosmetics to do that.
You don't need cosmetics. You might think you do, but you don't. Imagine how much you would gain by releasing your dependence on cosmetics. It's empowering and liberating.
In 2014, I entered a personal boycott on cosmetics, and this boycott remains intact today. I invite you to join me! Comment or DM to let me know :-)
