Wangaratta Sports Club The Wangaratta Sports Club has hosted the Wangaratta Gift, Wheelrace & wood chopping events since 1919 & is affiliated with the Victorian Athletic League.

Their is documented evidence of a Wangaratta Athletic Club in 1887, conducting a 130 yards Sheffield Gift. What began in 1919 as a modest RSL sports carnival, soon developed into one of Australia's premier professional foot running carnivals on the athletic calendar. The first Gift race was conducted in 1919, and was known as the RSL Gift up until 1923, with the first Wheelrace conducted in 1926.

Since 1934 the club has conducted its annual carnival on the Australia Day long weekend. Run on grass, athletes are handicapped according to form and ability, and start off varying marks accordingly. Runners race for glory and prize money. The 2016 Carnival will be the 96th carnival conducted at the Wangaratta Showgrounds.
