In the cooler months your water troughs will freeze over and can take some time to defrost unless the ice is broken up, your animals will not drink from it.
Some areas are worse then others, here are some handy tips to help you keep your water from freezing

Prevent water troughs from freezing using low-cost hacks like floating a sealed bottle filled with concentrated saltwater to create an agitation point. For continuous maintenance, use submerged or floating tank heaters designed for plastic or metal troughs. You can also partially bury the tank to use the earth's natural heat. Bottle Trick: Fill a sealed plastic bottle or jug halfway with a highly concentrated saltwater mixture (which freezes at a much lower temperature than fresh water) and let it float. As animals nudge it or the wind blows, the slight movement and the liquid inside help prevent a solid sheet of ice from forming.

Positioning for Sunlight: If you haven't set up your trough yet, place it in a location that receives maximum winter sunlight and is sheltered from the prevailing, freezing winds.

Partial Burial or Insulation: Sinking a trough partially into the ground or mounding dirt around the exterior utilises the earth's thermal properties to keep the water from freezing solid. Wrapping the exterior in durable, water-resistant insulation or enclosing it in old tractor tires filled with spray foam adds an extra barrier.Powered De-Icers & HeatersTrough Heaters & De-icers: For reliable operation, drop a submerged electric stock tank heater into the water. Make sure to purchase a unit that matches your trough type (many are specifically rated for plastic or rubber to prevent melting) and always ensure cords are chew-proof or safely out of reach of livestock.

Thermal Sensing Valves: Devices like the Freeze Miser connect to your water source and will automatically release a small trickle of water when the internal line gets dangerously close to freezing, maintaining flow and keeping ice at bay.

Heated Waterers: If you are overhauling your setup, invest in insulated or heated, purpose-built "Miracle" or automatic waterers which maintain a temperature safely above freezing without the need for manual ice-breaking.
