So very important: Coaches may have asked players to try something specific, play a new position, work on a particular skill, or make decisions differently to what spectators can see from the sidelines. Hearing conflicting instructions can leave players unsure of what they should be doing and take their focus away from the game.
Game day is also an important part of learning. Players need the opportunity to make decisions, take risks, and yes, sometimes make mistakes. Those moments help coaches identify what needs more work at training and allow players to develop confidence, resilience and game awareness.
The best support we can provide from the sidelines is positive encouragement, applause for effort, and celebrating teamwork. Leave the coaching to the coach and let the players play.
π ONE TEAM. ONE VOICE. π
At the Kilmore Broadford Netball Association, we love seeing families and supporters cheering from the sidelines. Your encouragement helps create the positive and welcoming environment that makes community netball so special.
However, we ask all spectators to remember one important principle:
π The coach is the only person providing instructions to players during the game.
While comments such as "Pass!", "Shoot!", "Move!", or "Defend!" may be well-intentioned, hearing multiple voices from the sideline can be overwhelming for young players. It can cause confusion, reduce confidence, and make it difficult for players to focus on the instructions they have been given by their coach.
Our coaches spend hours planning training sessions, teaching skills, developing game strategies, and preparing players for match day. Games are an opportunity for players to apply what they have learned, make decisions for themselves, and continue developing their understanding of the game.
As supporters, the most valuable thing we can do is:
π Cheer for great effort
π Celebrate teamwork
π Encourage all players
π Respect coaches, umpires and officials
π Let players play
Remember, players perform best when they can focus on the game, trust their training, and hear one clear voice from the bench.
Let's work together to create a positive, supportive and enjoyable environment for every player across the KBNA.
