GF Motorsports

GF Motorsports Welcome to GF Motorsports!! This is where you can find all the news that's fit to print, or scroll. ๐Ÿ˜ You see Sam is what is called a high-functioning autistic.

GF Motorsports was started in 2013, when our son Sam showed an interest in motor racing. This something that a great many kids do, but for Sam it was different. For Sam, most sports don't hold his interest, with one big exception; motor racing. He loves the V8's and NASCAR. This might have to do with his favourite movies (Cars and Cars 2), and that his favourite personality is racing driver Mark

"Frosty" Winterbottom. He has since expanded the list to include Chaz Mostert (Frosty's teammate). Driving has been very good therapy for improving his gross and fine motor skills and it is also a big boost to his confidence. One of our team goals is to help raise awareness for Autism. We started small with just the single kart, and spent many days practicing. As Sam got faster, we travelled to a couple of different tracks so that he could gain experience. We settled on Warwick Kart Club as our "home" track, because of the fun, friendly atmosphere. The other tracks are great, but there were far more positives going to Warwick, than there were negatives. Once we got a decent engine (thanks to Norm at Sweet Tune Engines), and a reasonable chassis Sam's confidence rose quickly. To the point of us entering him in his first race in November 2014. SOme rule changes caused us a bit of grief in 2015, and put us a bit behind in Sam's development. Instead of being able to stay in Cadets for another year, Sam was forced to move up to Rookies (now called Cadet 12). I had to source a different engine, and we just never got comfortable with it. Sam has done his best, but with nearly all of the competitors in his class moving to the new engine, we had to follow suit. So for Sam's 10th birthday he got a brand new Vortex Mini Rok. It coincided with the WKC Junior Top Guns event. He was rather excited when he saw the engine. Before I move on, I need to mention that our team expanded to 2 drivers in 2015. We added Jack. The new rules allowed 6 year olds to practice, so we bought Jack a kart of his own and just before his 7th birthday he got to have a drive. Jack is running a similar chassis (both are made by the Italian kart manufacturer OTK) to Sam's, which makes things so much easier for me. Jack progressed quickly, and managed to have his first race at WKC's Junior Top Guns too. What are our goals, and what does the future hold for GF Motorsports ?? First of all, we want to raise awareness for Autism, and to show that Autistics can compete at a high level alongside of "neuro-typical" kids. Although motorsports can be incredibly serious, we are in it for the enjoyment of the sport. It's a sport that promotes communication, team work, quick thinking, yet it still boils down to the individual. Due to the costs involved in motorsports, we are nearly always seeking partners to help our team. So if you, or someone you know is interested in working with us, please drop us a line. Ideally we would like to partner with a company (or companies) who are also passionate about motorsports, and promote fun, and developing kids. We are looking for partners that are willing to work with us for several years. We want some continuity so that we can strive for, and achieve our team's goals. Thank you for visiting the GF Motorsports page. For more information about Autism Spectrum Disorder please check out: http://www.autismawareness.com.au/

Sunday was the day that just kept giving. Saturday afternoon practice we had managed to sort an issue that has been plaguing us for a while now. Namely a sticking brake caliper. With help from Simon and Adam (ok they sorted it, but I did fetch tools for them ๐Ÿซ ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜†) we finally got the caliper to release fully. So hopefully we might gain a bit of pace.

We hadn't locked down who would start, as the order would be chosen by pulling a numbered ping pong ball. I pulled 9th. Second last as it turned out. That meant that I would start the race. As mentioned on Sunday, I did all right. Beating my previous Pb by a full second! The kart felt so much better than the previous round at Cooloola. Much easier for me to drive. I still have a ways to go though.

We had pace, and Jack, Sam and Ashton showed it. We were making a bit of a come back from the track position I had lost us, when a wheel stud decided it had enough. Safety kart, and lost laps while we sorted it. The restart caused another safety kart, and Jack had to wait for the green flag before getting back on track.

We toiled away, hoping to gain some laps back, but it wasn't to be. The other rear hub decided to join its twin. Broken studs, and we had to go and retrieve the kart once more. Losing more laps in the process. We borrowed a couple of rear hubs, and returned to the track.

A brief shower of rain made things interesting in the last hour or so. Jack went out and showed how much he has improved in the wet conditions, consistently up with the leaders in laptimes. This was a common theme for us, especially Jack. His best (and the team's best ) lap was only 1 tenth off of the fastest lap of the race. It turned out to be the 3rd fastest of the race. The top 3 were separated by less than 0.1 seconds. At 1 point Jack was on pace to take the fastest lap, but a very small mistake cost him in the final 2 turns. Still it is a relief to see that we had the pace to be up with the front teams. If only the slow guy would pick up his pace. ๐Ÿ˜…

We did finish in 9th, as we weren't the only ones to have issues. Loking forward to our next race to be held at Ipswich at the end of May. We'll see what we can do there.

That's all for now, just a quick note to thank Ashton Edwards for subbing in at the last minute. He did an absolutely great job for us. Very proud of the team for not giving up, and for persevering. We were down, but not out. We took some positives out of this race, and our sticker kit looks awesome too.

Thanks to SEKQLD for putting on the race. Thank you to our officials and volunteers who took time out of their weekends to allow us the privilege of racing. Special mention to my son Sam who volunteered to do the ode at 1100 on Saturday morning.

One last thank you to Revolution Racegear for joining with SEKQLD as a sponsor. If you need racegear, go and check them out.

For those following along at home, round 2 is off and running. We got off to a flier with me at thecwheel for my very 1st time starting. I managed to drop my Pb several times during the race. I'm still off the pace, but improving. I had fun too, which is the main thing. I lost a couple of laps to Adam, but that is nothing to be ashamed of. He is so freaking quick!! The kart feels as good as it looks now. Our quicker drivers will take it from here.

Up here in sunny (at times) Warwick Kart Club for round 2 of the SEK QLD endurance championship. Had quite a few runs in practice and we're getting there. I've done 2 sessions and happy with my progress. I can still be timed with a calendar, but with my progress, I might even be using a sundial! ๐Ÿ˜†

Boys are doing well, as is our last minutes recruit Ashton Edwards. Two of our drivers couldn't make it, and hopefully will be back in the saddle for round 3 at Ipswich in May. Get well soon guys!!

We are debuting our new sticker kit, and it looks fantastic!! I'm sure it's giving us an extra 3 tenths right there. ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜ Thanks to Kart Wraps for the awesome kit.

Anyway that's all for now.
