What is Supercompensation??
Supercompensation curve is a sports science theory that is adopted by many Trainers both at a professional and Elite level.
There are 4 periods in this theory. First is the initial fitness period. This is the starting place for our bodies.
The second is the training period, this is the time we spend exercising (Gym, swim, cycle etc).
The third period is Recovery. This is the time we spend giving our body rest, nutrition & hydration.
The final is the supercompensation period. During this time our fitness surpasses the initial fitness level due to our bodies ability to adapt to change, and is the optimal time for further training.
If there are no further workouts during the supercompensation period then this fitness level will slowly decline back towards the initial fitness level.
- If the next workout takes place during the recovery period,
over-training may occur.
- If the next workout takes place during the supercompensation
period, the body will advance to a higher level of fitness.
- If the next workout takes place after the supercompensation
period, the body will remain at the base level.
So why is the Supercompensation curve important to us? Because it shows us that with the right amount of rest and recovery we can perform better. Were all tempted to hit the gym as hard as we can and as often as we can. However this scientific theory shows us that we need to find balance. Rest, nutrition, sleep and hydration play a massive roll in our ability to get to that Supercompensation curve which in turn will allow us to push harder and help us to achieve our goals faster.
