Have you had a good look around the historic and unique Walhalla cemetery?
Following the discovery of gold in December 1862, many miners rushed to the area in search of their fortune. Conditions were harsh and primitive at the time and with the establishment of a settlement, death soon made its inevitable appearance amongst the townsfolk.
The first recorded burial within the town was in November 1863 of the wife of Mr John Davis, a storekeeper from dysentery. This was followed by the burial of the infant daughter of Mr and Mrs John Carbery who died 1 week after her birth. Tragically 6 days later Mrs Carbery died also.
The cemetery site was eventually surveyed in 1872 and had separate sections for Protestants, Catholics, Chinese and even 'Paupers, pagans and Jews'!
Over 1,100 persons are thought to have eventually been buried there.
If you would like to learn more about our cemetery we have Yolanda Reynolds informative book 'Walhalla Graveyard to Cemetery' available for purchase at Walhalla station. The book includes a fold out map of cemetery plot locations
A short walk from Walhalla station, the cemetery has stories of fascinating characters and historical memorial headstones worthy of considered attention. πͺ¦Note that some of the windy tracks up the hill are quite steep.
