Full house at Waikerie Bowls Spring Carnival
The Waikerie Bowling Club’s annual Spring Carnival was played in perfect weather and attracted full greens for all three days.
Teams from across the State and one from Victoria attended the event with 120 players filling the greens for fours competition on Saturday and Sunday and 60 for the pairs competition on Monday.
President of the Waikerie Bowling Club Mike Blythe said he was very happy to see so many teams from clubs with the Eyre Peninsulas well represented with teams from Streaky Bay, Tumby Bay, Port Neil and Port Augusta. The Yorke Peninsula had teams from Moonta and Yorketown, Ardrossan, and others came from Port Elliott, McLaren Vale, Kapunda, Karoonda, Murray Bridge, Swan Reach and the Riverland.
“Everyone seemed to have a great time socially and, on the greens, and many teams have already entered for next year’s event.”
This year’s tournament organisers, Tim and Judy Strauss said interest in coming to Waikerie was so high several of the Waikerie teams had to be balloted out to cater for those travelling.
Mike Blythe thanked the sponsors for the three days - Waikerie Hotel, Gerry from Berri and Agri-Tech Engineering Services for their on-going support for the Waikerie Bowling Club and the Spring Carnival.
During the presentation of prizes on Sunday night Lesley Burnett paid a special tribute to sponsor Gerry Van Der Myle (Gerry from Berri) for his sponsorship of the event for the past 10 years. She explained how he got his alias and said 10 years ago Gerry pledged to sponsor the Spring Carnival for a decade. This was his final year and the Club thanked him for his generous support.
Winner of the Saturday Fours competition was a team from Yorketown, Thomas Block, Zane Block, Andy Rogers, and Chris Laity. Runners-up were Ron Reynolds, Gary Seacombe, Nanette Smith and Gavin Sincock, a composite team from Barmera and Streaky Bay.
On Sunday the winners from Port Elliott were Peter Cullen, Roland Parry, Trevor Wilson, and Terry Hogg. Runners-up were Ron Reynolds, Gavin Sincock, Nanette Smith and Kelvin Carter a composite Barmera and Streaky Bay team.
The final day pairs competition was won by Kym Shepherd and Rob Dempsey of Tumby Bay and Port Neil, and runners-up were Neil and Lyn Laxton of McLaren Vale.
At the conclusion of each day of play, President Mike Blythe thanked the many volunteers for their help and running such a successful event. From the greens keeper, the scorers, bar staff and the caterers in the kitchen who provided a hot meal each day and he also thanked the many bowlers who played the game in such a wonderful spirit.

Club achievement celebrated
A small gathering of Bowling Club members met on Monday morning to celebrate the completion of the long awaited Ladies’ locker room and toilets.
President Mike Blythe together with some of the volunteers who worked on the project were joined by about 10 women who provided morning tea.
Mike said there were many hours of work by volunteers to strip the old rooms and prepare and finish off the project after the completion of tradie work.
He said it was wonderful to celebrate Club activities like this and “we don’t do enough to recognise our own achievements.”
Mike paid tribute to all the workers saying that Robert Pickett was the architect of the project liaising with the lady members and then coming up with a plan for the upgrade.
He also made special mention of the painting work by Ian Haese, who spent many long hours doing meticulous work both in the ladies’ section and also starting on the men’s lockers and toilets.
Robin Hoffman, Robert Haynes, Terry Nitschke, John Segneri, Grant Frahm, John Mortimer, Andy Fulwood, Darren Kleemann and Brian Rogers were also thanked for volunteering time for the project.
John Segneri also thanked President Mike Blythe who led from start to finish and spent many more hours on the job or organising tradespeople in a co-ordinated manner to complete the project before our Spring Bowling Carnival.
Mike then called on Vice President and Ladies’ Club Singles Champion Judy Strauss to officially cut the toilet paper to open the new rooms. The ladies were then invited to inspect their newly renovated facilities.

This carnival is being run for all bowlers using an arm. It is tournament Waikerie is trying to establish not only for Riverland Bowlers but for bowlers all over the State. To make this the success it deserves please add your name or team to the entries by contacting Maxine Morley.
