Eastern Great Southern Ladies Golf Association (EGSLGA) & Upper Great Southern Women’s Golf Association (UGSWGA) 2025 Co-hosted Championships at NAREMBEEN GOLF CLUB INC.
The following is a comprehensive account of our recent Ladies 3 Day Golf Carnival held on 1-3 August.
Two years ago the women members of the Narembeen Golf Club joined the EGSLGA.
Each year the EGSLGA has traditionally combined with another association, the UGSWGA to compete in a three day ladies golf carnival. Last year 8 Narembeen ladies competed in the carnival for the first time which was hosted in Katanning and this year we hosted the event here in Narembeen.
How hard could it be we ruminated as we drove home from Katanning that day and over the next twelve months??????
Well the Carnival was a great success, however it did throw up its challenges.
These were in the form of the sheer number of volunteers required to organise the course, manage the kitchen, prepare the food and set up and score the various competitions and then throw in the wild and stormy weather over the final two days of the Carnival including a huge hail storm with thunder and lightning which caused us to suspend play for an hour and a vote necessary from the associations present to determine whether or not to continue play!!
Special thanks go to the following people:
• Our very generous sponsors listed herein;
• Ladies Captain, Maxine Miolini,
for all of her work navigating the complexities of the Tournament with its Terms of Play which had to be strictly adhered to, overseeing and scoring the six separate competitions within the carnival;
• Vice captains, Noela Cole and Sherrie Heather who assisted Maxine with organising the draws for the 4BBB on the first day, the Friday and the draws for 4 separate Stroke and Stableford competition over Saturday and Sunday; doing up the cards for each event and helping with determining the daily Stableford and Gross and Nett and overall winners;
• Our President, Robert Miolini and Men’s Captain, Paul Wanless who provided steady support through the whole process starting the first day off supervising the logistics of a Shotgun Start for the 4BBB, handing out the cards each day, manning the bar, deciphering the scores on the wet cards, rescuing wet and stranded players when the comp was temporarily suspended due to lightening thunder and rain, driving the complimentary bus into and out of town from the golf club and generally keeping us calm! In addition thank you to Men’s Vice Captain Danny Gray who assisted Paul Wanless and Robert Miolini in the Captains box.
• Our very own non golfer extraordinaire and honorary member, Rhonda Cole, who not only supervised the kitchen arrangements over the three days but embroidered over sixty five hand towels to be given to the Carnival participants without payment but given in kindness to the Club;
• Our Head of Grass, Bevan Thomas
who supervised the preparation of the course before the carnival and each morning of the carnival in very trying conditions and needed a snorkel whilst raking the greens as well as our very own Jeremy Padfield who it seems is indispensable around the club both on the fairways, building our shed and ongoing maintenance issues in the clubrooms;
• Our Catering Gurus, Julie Hayter (Vice President) and Julie Miller who successfully organised the catering by the club members of the provision of food for each of the three days, the kitchen, the staffing of the kitchen, and other essentials for the whole three days including a coffee van;
• Our Entertainment Committee of one person, Gina Deluis who outdid herself again with the one handed supervision of the decoration of the clubhouse over the three days. Gina was also outstanding in the dressing of the Clubhouse for our Saturday night show with the “Pyjamas” theme, the skits and Songs and the very very funny unveiling of the alternate non prizes (as they were not allowed for in the Conditions of Play Carnival Rules). Gina was ably assisted in the entertainment by Maxine and also Robert Hayter when he was presented with an award for his bar services – it being a G-String which he was compelled by the audience to put on (and then take off haha) to the sounds of the song “LEAVE YOUR HAT ON from The Full Monty. Gina was last seen in search of our missing Mimsy sign
which went missing sometime during the carnival. Fortunately we found an electronic copy!!
• All of our many kitchen volunteers including all of our current members, wives and partners of our men members,
some past members being Elsie Palmer, Dale Dixon, Di Miolini and Eilish Bailey and new to town, Anne Marinoni;
• Lyn Cova and Ian Forbes who faithfully turned up each morning in the dark to clean the clubhouse and have it fresh for the new day;
• The Clubs men members who helped out with the course preparation beforehand and during the carnival, organising to take the buggies out and back for the 4BBB and attending to Cart breakdowns, the putting out and picking up of novelty pins, helping in the kitchen and the bar
Despite the weather, we were able to finish the Carnival at 4 o’clock after a beautiful afternoon tea of mulled wine, jelly cakes, delicious chocolate and passionfruit sponges, homemade sausage rolls, party pies, chicken pieces, quiches and the like. The presentations of the Winners took place then the event ended with everyone singing ‘Auld Lang Syne’ and ‘The Carnival is Over’.

How hard could it be we asked after we drove home from Katanning that day in 2024???
The answer was that it was a great deal harder and more work for the whole club and it’s members past and present than I think we originally anticipated.
Notwithstanding that – IT WAS A GREAT SUCCESS - JOB VERY WELL DONE TO EVERYONE CONCERNED!!!
