So many movements in basketball require rotational strength such as long passes, changing direction after a crossover or for a fast break and pulling away a loose ball. The kettlebell pendulum swing is a great exercise for building that core strength. Working with former WABL/SBL athlete and now woman's AFL player

26/10/2018

Building your upperbody size and strength is critical for bowling through defenders and strong finishes at the rim 🎳. Training the pecs contributes to speedy crossovers and passes 🏀💨and working the triceps will also help with the range and height of your shot.

The bent over row is the best all in one exercise for building back, arm, core and leg strength. Great for ripping the ball away from your opponents!

1. Keep the bar close to your body.

2. Push your butt back.

3. Slightly bend your knees but keep them behind your toes.

4. Nice strong two handed grip just outside your knees.

5. Push your core into the ground and keep a straight tabletop back.

6. Drive your elbows up fast until the bar hits your upper/mid abdominal. Squeez your shoulder blades together

7. Lower the bar slowly to the ground.

8. Keep your core tight through the whole movement.

He is ONE IN A BILLION PART 2:

At 14 he was awarded a scholarship to IMGR basketball academy in Bradenton, Florida.

He left his home, family and friends to pursue his basketball career.

He grew to 7’ 2” weighing 132kg.

After training and competing there for years he was found to be ineligible for the NCAA due to poor english skills and lack of American Citizenship.

In 2015 he was an early entrant in the NBA draft and became the first player in 10 years to enter without playing in college, professionally overseas or in the NBA development league.

He was drafted at pick 52 by the Dallas Maverics where he played for the Texas legends, the D league affiliate of the Mavs!

This story goes to show that NO MATTER WHER YOU ARE FROM you can succeed if you have the right focus, guidance and perseverance.

There is a part in the documentary where Satnam says “My father said, Satnam you have only three things in life..... Basketball, study and go to sleep”

Too many basketballers these days are focused on their social media followings, parties, girls.

These are all distractions that will lead you off the path to righteousness and long term fulfillment.

I’m not saying don’t have fun but be very careful where you invest your time and energy.

Devils are lurking to pull you astray and they don’t have your best interests at hand.

Matthew 7:13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For the gste that is broad is the road that leads to destriction and many enter through it”

Bye for now

He is ONE IN A BILLION Part 1!

So I was watching a documentary called ‘One in a Billion’

It is about Indian born basketball player
Satnam Sinh.

Satnam was born in a very poor small village in India.

Being from a country where the main sport was cricket and most people couldn’t tell you what basketball is there wasn’t alot of training opportunities in the sport.

He grew up working the farms with his father, work he thought he may me doing for the rest of his life.

Luckily he was blessed with height and was 6’11”, weighed 103 kg and wore size 18 shoes by the time he was 13!

Imagine trying to get those shoes.

At age 10 he enrolled at a basketball academy in his town which had 1 indoor court in a run down facility with broken roofs, bad flooring and no heating or cooling.

After leading the Punjab state national team to a championship the Basketball Federation of India chose him to play in the basketball without borders camp in Singapore.

He first got international recognition when the basketball without borders program.

Troy Justice the director of basketball operations of NBA in India discovered Satnam.

"First time I saw him play, he was wearing shoes that were falling apart. The seams had split, and he was coming right out of them. That's all he had. He was growing so fast. We helped him get shoes. I've heard people talk, but we're not sure they know how big he'll get."

Squat is king 👑. If I had to choose only 1 exercise for basketball it would be the squat! If you’re not squating you are MISSING OUT on so much potential for explosiveness on the court. Not to mention more strength to hold your ground in defence, box out defenders, more elevation in your jumper, higher hops for rebounds/blocks and layups.

Drill for lighting quick crossovers and faster footwork✋🏀🤚⚡️. Alot of coaches have been giving tennis ball drills alot of hate lately calling them ‘clown drills’. I believe this drill however FORCES your crossover to become faster. If it’s slow you won’t have enough time to catch the tennis ball. Practice this with all combination of crossovers and believe me your crossover will get fast!

Banana dipped in peanut butter. Great post game snack after a tough game of basketball. Bananas are a great source of natural sugar for muscle glycogen (energy) stores as well as potassium to replace electrolytes lost in sweat. Peanut butter (organic is better) is a great source of protein for muscle repair. 🍌🥜

How else do you play in the moment without overthinking?

The secret is to get the mind, body and spirit in sync.

Reduce anxiety and tension brought on by negative beliefs.

You need to break the cycle of negative thought ===> Negative Belief ===> Negative action

We can’t control our thoughts, our thoughts are what happen to us, we don’t create them.

However we can choose what we BELIEVE.

What we believe will then determine what actions we take as a result.

Allowing negative thoughts to turn into negative beliefs will lead to negative actions.

To break it you must question your thoughts using the four questions:

1. Is it true,

2. Can I absolutely be sure that it’s true.

3. What feelings, emotions, actions arise when I believe that thought.

4. Who would I be without that thought?

Then turn that thought around by providing three examples in your life that disprove the negative thought.

This can be hard to do in a game when your mind is racing so it is best practiced outside of the game.
During the game it is important to break the cycle by letting the last play go and focusing on the next.

Pre game strategies include meditation/ mindfullness and deep breathing so you can focus on your thoughts and drop negative ones.

This helps you to be in the moment which is critical for a player when there are many split second decisions to be made in a game.
