Hartwell round 1.
It was an early start to the Hartwell season which has been shortened to a 3 round series this year. The first round was at Phillip Island and being the middle of summer everyone was expecting some glorious weather but Phillip island being Phillip island welcomed us with rain.
Warm ups were changed to Qualifying 1 and then qualifying was Q2. I’m not sure why but possibly to give people the chance to change tires or just wait for things to dry out.
As I hadn’t ridden in the wet since my big crash at Phillip island in 2019 whilst leading in the wet, I went out trying to build up my confidence again, misjudged the speed that you can do around Turn 4 and slide off. I spent the next 45 minutes changing a handle bar, front brake lever and repairing the fairings with Gaffer tape just in time for Q2. It had now stopped raining so nervously ventured out on slicks and managed to get a couple of laps in before a little slide through Stoner at around 180 had me puckering a bit so slowed me down so I qualified near the rear of the grid for the Formula 400’s. Just as we went out for the Thunder bike / Historic Q2 it started to drizzle so quite a few didn’t qualify and started at the back of the grid. I managed a to qualify 23rd with around 6 Thunder bikes and large P5 and P6 bikes starting behind me so turn 1 on the first lap was going to be interesting.
The Formula 400 races are shared with the George Carrick riders which are GP based 125 and 250’s. They are set off 10 to 15 seconds or so before us and it makes it interesting when you catch some of the slower bikes, it is normally just as you enter a corner and have to ride around them as well as not loose time when chasing another F400 rider who luckily passed them on the straight. I had 3 good races against Geoff Sanders, Jason Dowell and Scott Emanuelsson on their ZXRs and finished 6th overall in the 400’s and First in the Non Experienced championship. (Does help when 2 of the top riders in the class are not racing due to one being injured and the other in NZ on his honeymoon).
In the Thunder bikes and Historic's I managed not to get run over at the start by the ones starting at the back and had a good duel in race 1 with a Period 5 Harris Kawasaki 1200 which I somehow managed to stay ahead of in the race for the line. Race 2 he got the better of me when we caught up to a Ducati 999 which I also managed to beat to the line. Overall I finished 22nd out of 31 starters and 3rd in the Period 6 Historics, so more silverware for my long suffering wife Audrey to dust.

After 6 months away from the track due to missing a round thanks to Covid I ventured to Broadford on Friday for a Champions race practice day to see how the track had changed after the re-resurfacing. It turned out to be a bit chilly but went out for a roll around and everything felt good. The surface is now a lot smoother in places with a lot more grip in the corners and the hump that I’d been using as a braking marker into School house removed. Second session I put the lap timer on and did 6 laps which averaged below my old PB with a new PB of 1.05.853. In the next session I had to drive through the start line area to give some space to the V4 Ducati that was holding me up. In the afternoon I changed the gearing to improve on that but ended up going backwards so changed back.
Saturday morning and it was the Hartwell seniors round. All entrants have to be 45 years or older and some pretty full grids for some classes with some very nice (and expensive) period 4, 5 and 6 bikes. I qualified 4th in the Period 6 and managed to get my first ever Pole position in the 55-59 up to 500 Race, 3 hundreds of a second in front of an 88 RS 250 GP bike.
In the first P6 race I dropped a position to the RS 250 to finish 5th. In the up to 500 race I got a good start, saw a RS 250 front wheel going up towards crash corner and then he managed to pass on the next lap on the start finish straight and block me in to turn 1. I tried to out brake him in a couple of corners but couldn’t pass and then on the last lap going into crash he must have left his braking a bit too late to stop me passing and lost the front wheel. I managed to miss all the debris keep myself together and finished the lap in one piece to claim my first ever checkered flag.
Sunday morning was the qualifying for the Cup races where your age is added to your bikes age to sort out the groups. Qualified 5th for the 85+ Cup, managed to finish 6th in the race ahead of some GSXR 750’s and Colin on his Ducati 748.
Finished 4th in the P6 race and 4th overall and lead from start to finish in the up to 500 race to claim my second ever checkered flag and the first place trophy.
Thanks to Hartwell for putting on a great meeting, my fellow Formula 400 competitors for all the encouragement and praise, all of the other competitors for making it a memorable weekend and of cause not to forget all of the Marshals and support staff.

Finally I’ve managed to win an award at a Hartwell event. This is a perpetual trophy for my dismal 54.3 in 2021. Backed it up with a 55.9 this year. Watch this space for a trifecta in 2023.

Finally the moons aligned and we are back at the track after 6 months and it’s been 9 months since we were here at Broadford. It didn’t take long to blow out all the cobwebs and be back at my usual times in the first session. Second session managed to unofficially knock off .014 from my PB, still a bit of work to do to be up with the experienced class but looks promising. Nice to see happy smiling faces again after so long behind masks.

Well the 2020 International Island Classic is over and although no personal best times were improved on I did beat the goal of 1.56 I set as a marker a couple of times. I know the bike is down a good 5% on power due to the engine change after the slight faux pas the last time I was here so there is plenty of room for improvement. I probably should have transferred the clutch from the last engine instead of using an unknown one from the donor road bike that could have a million miles on it and failed Saturday but I managed to do a better bodge on it than we did last year as I managed to finish off today. The highlight of the weekend and possibly my whole short racing career was passing the NZ god other wise known as Glen Kettle down the main straight on his NSR400 and giving him the bird whilst passing. Thanks to all of my pit mates from the weekend and also the Hartwell members dropping by giving advice and helping out.

Race day 1 at the Phillip Island Classic. First time back after the slight mishap at the Hay Shed in rd3 of the Vic Titles. Back to the original gold (some say Poo Brown) paintwork due to the earlier mentioned mishap. Practice day didn’t set the world alight due to rain and getting used to being back out on track again. 2 qualifying sessions and 2 races today so hopefully will improve on yesterday’s times.

First photo shows how close the finish with Colin Sarre was, 0.044 of a second to be precise in Col's favour, amazing how much an extra 350cc help.
Second photo shows how close it sometimes gets with a few of the experienced guys just ahead of 3 of the non-experienced riders with me in the mix.
