Vale Daniel "Harry" Harris
Very sad news for the baseball community here in South Australia, with the passing of one of our own, Daniel Harris, on Friday.
Put simply: Harry was a great character and friend - always up for some banter and was continually trying to improve himself and uplift others. Off the field as much as on the diamond, the long talks we would have about plays, calls, and situations, and life in general, could carry on into the wee hours.
After a few years of being a "clubbie", Harry started league umpiring in 2020, joining the umpire academy program and quickly became one of the regular Men's Division 1 plate umpires.
He umpired over 300 games including SABL, SA Country Championships, Regional finals, and travelled across the country to umpire twice at the Australian Youth Championships, Senior and Junior League Championships, and was part of the inaugural Down Under Winter Classic in Qld.
Harry also coordinated umpires for the local school baseball competition, and helped encourage, recruit and train club umpires, because it was his way of giving back to the sport he grew up with.
He was the very surprised recipient of our Michael Peacock Award in 2023, our BUASA member-voted award for the umpire that people enjoyed to umpire with.
Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to Keryn, Dakota, and Jett, along with his extended family and friends around Australia and the world.
Rest in Peace.
