What a winter season for the Northern Lions! 🦁🏏

Our T20 side made it to the semi finals for the second season in a row, another fantastic effort from a group that continues to grow stronger together.

Our Saturday side came agonisingly close as well, missing out on a semi final spot by just 0.03 points. That tells you just how competitive the season was and how close this group came to having both teams in the finals.

More than the results, this season was about the dedication shown by everyone who pulled on the Northern Lions jersey. Turning up week after week, backing each other, competing hard and building a great team culture along the way.

A fantastic winter season and plenty to be proud of.

0.03 points.

That is all that separated Northern Lions from 4th position in the final Saturday B2N ladder.

Many of our members and supporters have asked what happened with our Saturday team’s semi-final qualification, so we wanted to provide a factual update.

During the final stages of the competition, Northern Lions was initially advised that we had qualified for the semi-finals. That advice was subsequently corrected and we were informed that our inclusion had been a mistake.

Questions also arose regarding the timing of changes to the competition ladder, the finalisation of match records and the calculation of competition points.

Given that the final difference between 4th and 5th was only 0.03 points, Northern Lions sought clarification and ultimately lodged a formal grievance with Warehouse Cricket Association Queensland.

The WCAQ Secretary has acknowledged our grievance and confirmed that it has been referred to members of the Executive Committee for review.

We respect that process and are awaiting the outcome.

For us, this has now become about something bigger than one semi-final.

Community cricket works when players and clubs can have confidence that:

• competition rules are clear and consistently applied;
• results and ladders are properly verified before important decisions are made;
• clubs can ask legitimate questions without unnecessary conflict; and
• disputes have a fair and transparent review process.

We also recognise that community cricket relies heavily on volunteers and we appreciate the work involved in running these competitions.

Our intention is not to attack individuals.

However, this experience has made us interested in understanding whether other Warehouse Cricket players, captains or clubs have had similar experiences relating to competition administration, results, ladder changes, communication or complaint handling.

Northern Lions produced a complete team performance to secure a first innings victory over Carina on 25th July.

After restricting Carina for 246 (dec) the Lions responded in style with 410, taking a commanding 164 run first innings lead.

The innings was built around a magnificent 125 by Mithun Iranga, supported brilliantly by Navid (77) and Tharusha (48). Valuable contributions from Rukshan (37) and Virantha (32) ensured the Lions turned a good position into a dominant one.

Earlier, Sameera Perera (3 wickets) and Lithum (2 wickets) led the bowling attack, while Nirosh, Mithun and Eranga all chipped in with wickets to bowl Carina out for 246.

A complete performance with both bat and ball. Well done to everyone who contributed to another excellent result.

Back to Back Semi Finals! 💙💛

For the second season in a row, Northern Lions are heading to the semi finals. A fantastic achievement for the club and a reward for the hard work, commitment and belief this group has shown all season.

Batting first, we posted 116/7, with Kansajith De Silva leading the way with a composed 45. Navod Rajasinghe (27), Mithun Iranga (13) and Rukshan De Alwis (12) all made valuable contributions to set a competitive target.

Our bowlers then took complete control.

🔥 Hansaka Wickramasinghe finished with outstanding figures of 4/14, while Nirosh Fernando claimed 3 wickets. Namal Balasooriya and Jaliya Amarasinghe chipped in with one wicket each as we bowled the opposition out for 83.

👏 A special mention to our fielding. Brilliant catches from Sameera Perera, Namal Balasooriya, Rukshan De Alwis and Lakmal lifted the team and kept the pressure on throughout the innings. Those moments made a real difference.

This group has earned its place among the final four. Now the focus shifts to the next challenge.

The job isn’t finished yet.
