Vale Jack Garaty

Our club is very saddened to hear of the passing of Jack Garaty, aged 92

Jack Garaty has the honour of being Cricket Southern Lakes 1st grade player #1, captaining the side in our first match before handing the reins to John O’Brien. Jack was a big man who bowled medium pace from a great height. He bowled outswingers, and he was able to cut the ball back off the wicket. His run-up began with a stutter and a shuffle, but once in stride, he bowled with great accuracy, with a smooth, mechanical action. Each delivery, whilst appearing the same, as it landed on a sixpence, would be delivered with much thought, cunning, and purpose.

Jack won the Robert Holland (TIN) Cup on 3 occasions (1963/64, 64/65 & 66/67)

The club chose the best ever CSL teams during our 25th and 50th seasons, Jack being selected in both sides.

Jack Garaty played 112 matches from 1959 to 1970, 111 in 1st grade. He took 243 wickets @ 18.60. Best bowling of 6 for 22 vs University with 11 five wicket hauls. Jack sits 15th all-time for wickets taken for CSL, 6th all-time for 1st grade wickets. He scored 1336 runs @ 15.90, highest score of 52.

One of Jack’s last official roles with the club was in 2017/18. He honoured us with his presence to present a First XI debut cap to his grandson, Luke.

Club president David Lulham noted "On behalf of CSL, we are saddened by the passing of Jack Garaty. He was a very well-respected player and club stalwart. Our thoughts are with Jack's family at this difficult time."

Vale Ron Kilner (Kellner), who passed away aged 95. Ron joined the club in his mid 30s in 1966/67 as a very capable lower grade wicket keeper until 1974/75.

Ron contributed to the club in executive positions, serving 4 years as secretary from 70/71 to 73/74 and vice president in 74/75. Ron still holds a 3rd grade club record for the most dismissals in a season (20)

One memorable tale about Ron was recounted in our 50th anniversary yearbook.

Ron was an experienced wicket-keeper when the captain of 4th grade, Phil Croft got him to play with the club. Phil wanted Ron as his keeper because it allowed the then current keeper Rod Mudford to open the bowling. Rod was the quickest and straightest bowler in the team so they didn’t want him keeping.

In one of the matches against Hamilton-Wickham the opposition had a 2nd grade batsman playing and they were chasing our total. The 2nd grade batsman was about 80 not out and threatening to win the game for his team.

There was a mix up in the running and both batsmen ended up in the centre of the wicket when the return came into keeper Ron. The batsmen very quickly arranged for the good player to go to the opposite end to the keeper.

Keeper Ron took the return and made out to take the bails off in a loud appeal but he did not take the bails off. Instead he ran very quickly to the other end and ran out the good player. Phil and his 4th grade team won the match.

By the way Ron only allowed one bye in all matches that season.

His funeral service will be held at Toronto Anglican Church 11am on Wednesday 29th July.

🏏 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗷𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗴𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗲🏏

Over the last few years we've tried to get a Stage 3 girls competition off the ground. We've tried a few things and haven't quite found the sweet spot. So this time we engaged with the girls, surveyed parents and clubs, and have worked to build something around what they told us they wanted. We think this gives us the best chance yet - but we need everyone on board to give it a red hot crack. 🙌

The plan looks a little different to traditional junior cricket models. But we believe it will deliver what the girls have been asking for.

💡 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝟯 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁:
A Friday afternoon T20 competition for girls aged U14 to U18 (Season 2026/27). Instead of clubs forming teams, NJCA will draft players into balanced, competitive teams - while working to keep small friendship groups together. 🏏

🚨 Return Signing News 🚨

The management committee is please to announce the retention of Josh Westwood for season 26/27

Josh has been a longterm member of CSL including batting #3 in our drought-breaking 1st grade premiership win.

He had an excellent return of 674 runs and 28 wickets across all formats last year, seeing him return to form and showing why he is one of the elite allrounders in the NDCA competition.

Not only has Josh been an asset on the park, off the field he is one of our driving forces behind club culture and nurturing junior players when they are making the big leap across to seniors.

Our 3rd big re-signing for 26-27 and it’s shaping up to be a big one to be a Kooka so why not come join the fun 🤷

🚨 Return Signing News 🚨

The management committee is pleased to announce the retention of current Tin Cup winner and allround good guy Kobe Allison.

Whilst we may have slightly leaked the news in yesterday’s post, we had to touch on what was a season to behold lastyear.

Whilst battling an injury preventing him from bowling and sometimes even battling through the pain, Kobe scored a Monumental 1118 runs with 6x 50s and 3x 100s. His clean striking and aggressive nature saw some of the biggest hits we’ve ever seen.

We can’t wait to see what the upcoming season holds for Kobe and hopefully feature with the ball more which is frightening to think about…
