Deadlifts get a bad reputation. Usually the setup earns it, not the lift.
Most people copy a version off the internet and force their body to fit it. Stance too wide for their hips. Bar in the wrong spot for their arm length. Load on before the pattern holds. Then their back complains and they decide deadlifts aren't for them.
Set it up right and it's one of the safest heavy lifts there is. It loads the muscles either side of your spine, the ones you use to pick a kid up off the floor or stay upright through a long day at a desk. Even with a history of back trouble, supervised deadlift training can bring pain down and build core strength.
Here's the part people skip: the right setup comes from your build, not a tutorial. Arm length, torso length and hip shape decide whether you pull conventional, sumo or trap-bar. Long arms usually suit conventional. Long legs with a short torso often do better on sumo or trap-bar, which takes load off your lower back.
Our next 12-week block builds your deadlift around your structure instead of a textbook. By week 12 the lift you were wary of is the one you trust most.
