We congratulate BJ King on his magnificent performance at the 2026 Australian Open on the Gold Coast last week. BJ and Graham Healy entered the Over 60 Men’s Pairs and played in the Sectional (round robin) games on Monday June 15th. They played three games at Benowa Bowls Club with the following results:
Game 1 – They defeated David Thompson and Rod Wright 16-13;
Game 2 – They defeated Mick Pacholli and Brendan Hoey 15-14;
Game 3 – Thet defeated Ross Simon and Peter Kelly 20-9.
BJ and Graham won their sectional group which placed them into the Knockout Event which saw the top 128 teams play off. This is the first time that a City Bowls Team has progressed to the Knockout Competition. Unfortunately, Graham had to withdraw from further play for personal reasons. BJ secured a replacement player in Victorian player Russell Hall.
On Wednesday 17 June BJ and Russell played three rounds in the knockout competition at Club Robina with the following results:
Round 1 – They defeated Leslie Smith and Wayne Marsh (NSW) 19-8;
Round 2 – They defeated David Stephenson and Peter Gawthorne (VIC) 21-4;
Round 3 – They defeated John Nash and Chris Scott (QLD) 20-19.
On Thursday 18 June they continued in the knockout competition in the Round of 16 at Musgrave Hill Bowls Club with the following results:
Round 4 – They defeated Rowan Brassy and Sammy Laguzza (NSW) 19-6 to move into the quarter finals.
Quarter-final – They defeated Thomas Tarrant and Milan Bondzulic (QLD) 25-6 to move into the semi-finals.
Semi-final – They were defeated by Gary Rom and Michael Herbert (South Africa) 14-16. Gary and Michael ultimately lost the Final to the NSW pair of Tony Hinton and Warren Shipley 17-9.
This is a fantastic effort by BJ and the Toowoomba City Bowls Club congratulates him on his wonderful performance. He represented our club in a wonderful manner and is a credit to the Club. Thank you BJ for your efforts and commitment to the Club.

Deb Frecklington, Attorney General and Minister for Justice and Minister for Integrity, and Trevor Watts, Member for Toowoomba North visited the Toowoomba City Bowls Club, to announce that City was successful with our Gambling Community Benefit Fund Grant Application. The $35,000 grant will contribute to the refurbishment of our bar area. A big thank you to all those who made this possible.
