"Australia's health system is under growing pressure. We need solutions that not only improve health outcomes but also deliver measurable economic value”

ESSA's newest report shows that exercise physiology delivers strong returns on investment across a range of health conditions and care settings. It reduces healthcare costs, prevents avoidable hospital presentations and readmissions, improves productivity outcomes, and contributes to long-term economic prosperity.

Attention all tax payers. Thanks to Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) for commissioning an outstanding economic evaluation of the benefit of exercise physiology led therapy for 6 chronic health conditions in Australia. This much needed report provides numbers that will astonish even the most dedicated supporter of exercise physiology! "$1.09 billion in health system and productivity improvement savings ($940 million in health system savings alone) over 3 years!" Next step? Medicare reimbursement of exercise physiology services. The cost benefit is there in black and white (actually purple and white ;) ).

Motivation is great.

Right up until Monday morning.

Then it mysteriously disappears somewhere between your alarm and your first coffee.

The goal isn’t to feel motivated every day.
It’s to build a plan that makes doing the right thing easier — and boring enough to actually stick with.

Because if your exercise plan requires you to want to exercise every time…

…it’s probably not a very good plan.

Make it realistic. Make it enjoyable. Make it repeatable.

You don’t need more motivation.
You need a plan you don’t secretly hate.

What if one of the strongest predictors of longevity wasn’t your weight, cholesterol or even your blood pressure… but your muscular strength?

Most people think muscle is just about appearance.

The reality?

Muscle is one of the most powerful health tools you have.

As we age, maintaining muscle strength becomes increasingly important for:

💪 Living longer
Higher levels of muscular strength are associated with around a 30% lower risk of all-cause mortality compared with lower strength levels.

🩸 Better metabolic health
Skeletal muscle is the body’s largest site for insulin-stimulated glucose uptake, helping regulate blood sugar and improve insulin sensitivity.

🦴 Staying independent
Strength supports balance, mobility, bone health and the ability to continue doing the things you enjoy — from carrying groceries to travelling and playing with family.

❤️ Protecting your future health
Greater muscular strength is linked with a lower risk of chronic disease and improved quality of life.

The goal isn’t to become a bodybuilder.

It’s to build and maintain the strength you need for the life you want to live.

Because strength isn’t just about how you look today…

It’s about staying capable, independent and healthy for decades to come.

So ask yourself:

Are you building the muscle your future self will need?

Top 4 Things I Learnt Doing My First Triathlon

1. Consistency Over Perfection
Perfection is a moving target. Consistency is a choice. The fitness came not from the best sessions, but from returning to the work, again and again.

2. It Takes Longer Than You Think
The body adapts slowly. The mind adapts even slower. Most worthwhile things demand more patience than ambition wants to give them.

3. Things Rarely Go To Plan
Plans are useful until reality arrives. I cramped badly from kilometres 3–6 of the run and the race became something different than what I’d imagined. It wasn’t about executing the plan anymore—it was about adapting, staying calm, and finding a way forward.

4. Age Is Just A Story We Tell Ourselves
I completed my first triathlon at 40. The body may change with age, but its capacity to adapt never disappears. More often than not, the limits are the stories we tell ourselves long before the body reaches them.

The race lasted a few hours. The lessons will probably last a lifetime. 🏊‍♂️🚴‍♂️🏃‍♂️

Don’t start over, just start again, and again. Quit quitting….

Our practice is one that pays dividends over time, it does not leverage short-sighted motivation but applies our specialist skills in order to build sustainable plans.

This powerful idea is at the heart of true, lasting change. We often fall for the “new year, new me” trope, seeking a magical reset that erases our past “mistake debt.” But that debt holds the most valuable lessons! You’re not at the start line; you’re in the middle of whoever you’re going to be.

The journey to your health and fitness goals isn’t about a short-sighted burst of motivation. It’s about the long game—the practice that pays dividends over time. It’s about refusing to stop when you stumble, and instead, using those hard-won lessons to build a better strategy.

That’s where an Exercise Physiologist comes in.

We don’t believe in quick fixes or starting from scratch. We believe in honest self-reflection, standing on the lessons you’ve already learned, and building a sustainable, evidence-based plan that honours your journey so far. Let’s stop the cycle of quitting and restarting. Let’s build a plan that works for the you!

Ready to turn your lessons into a long-term strategy? Send me a message to book your initial consultation and let’s build a plan for a better year, not a wish upon a star!

🦴 Build Bone.
💪 Boost Strength.
🚶‍♀️ Prevent Falls.

Living with osteoporosis or osteopenia doesn’t mean you have to accept weakness or risk. Groundbreaking research shows that targeted resistance training — done safely and correctly — can increase bone density, improve balance, and reduce falls.

✅ The LIFTMOR study (Griffith & UQ) showed that just twice a week of high-intensity resistance and impact training:
→ Improved spine and hip bone density
→ Increased muscle strength and posture
→ Was safe and effective, even in older adults with low bone mass

✅ Griffith University follow-ups confirm:
→ Supervised exercise led by qualified professionals is the key to better outcomes
→ Confidence, mobility, and function all improved — not just the numbers on a scan
As Accredited Exercise Physiologists, this is exactly what we do — prescribe the right movement, at the right intensity, for your bones.

“Do We Really Need 10,000 Steps a Day? 🤔🚶‍♂️

Here’s a fun fact: the whole “10,000 steps a day” thing wasn’t even based on science – it was actually a marketing move by a Japanese pedometer company in the 1960s! 🤯 Turns out, you don’t actually *need* 10k steps for better health. Recent research shows that getting **7,200 steps a day** can significantly lower your risk of heart disease, diabetes, and even decrease your risk of **all-cause mortality by up to 30%! 🎯

But steps aren’t everything. The **Australian Physical Activity Guidelines recommend 150-300 minutes of moderate-intensity cardio** (hello brisk walking, cycling, or swimming 🏊‍♀️🚴) and 2 days of resistance training** to help prevent chronic conditions and keep your body strong. Adding in more daily movement (a.k.a. N.E.A.T.) like standing more, taking the stairs, or even gardening can also boost your metabolic health and lower your disease risk.

Hitting these exercise targets has some pretty serious benefits, including a 35% reduction in heart disease, 50% lower risk of diabetes, and a substantial decrease in anxiety, depression, and even some cancers. Plus, it’s been shown to decrease the risk of death from all causes by around **30-40%**. 🧠❤️

An Exercise Physiologist can help you integrate these recommendations into your daily routine with a personalised plan – whether it’s getting in your steps, strength training, or helping you move more throughout the day. Let’s step it up for better health! 💪👟
