Tocumwal 2 Final Round Pennant Report
Sunday marked the final round of the MidMurray Pennant season, played at Club Tocumwal, with a true local derby as Tocumwal 1 and Tocumwal 2 went head-to-head on home soil. Pride, bragging rights and plenty on the line for both sides.
Sitting 4th on the ladder, Tocumwal 2 entered the round with a semi-final berth still up for grabs. After claiming the wooden spoon last season, there was redemption and pride driving the group. Tocumwal 1, meanwhile, were fighting to avoid the same fate after making the final last year — and the bragging rights (and Keno ticket) were firmly on the line.
The opening pair of Rod Jackson and Phil Howe battled hard, but Tocumwal 1 took the first match. Shayne Austerberry and Darren Wise faced a tough contest next, going down 3 & 1, followed by Ross Clark and Ross Trevean, who also found the going tough and lost 3 & 1.
With Tocumwal 1 holding a 3–0 lead, Tocumwal 2’s finals hopes were hanging by a thread. Des Obrien and Noddy Ireland fought all day but were eventually defeated 5 & 4, while stand-in captain Shane Halloran and Jeff Rogers showed plenty of grit, taking their match to the 18th before narrowly going down 1 down.
Tocumwal 1 claimed a 5–0 victory and the local bragging rights for the next 12 months. However, thanks to results elsewhere, Tocumwal 2 scraped through to the semi-finals and will now face Deniliquin at Deniliquin on 11 January.
If you see any players who represented Tocumwal in MidMurray Pennant this season, please thank them for representing Club Tocumwal in such a positive manner.
A big thank you to Baldwin Buses for their continued support and to the Pro Shop for supplying golf balls.
