We’ve had a ball over the last two Thursdays hosting students from Tin Can Bay State School on their first intro to sailing. Just two sessions in and they were confidently sailing in the bay, capsizing (on purpose) and rightly the boat and chasing each other in the creek. Even one of the local dolphins tagged along for a while, intrigued by all the enthusiastic banter on the water.

Series 4 Race 7 & 8, 26 April 2026
Whilst the Strong Wind warning had been cancelled, things were still looking a little touch and go as we rigged in the hardstand and deliberated on a suitable course as the regular squalls keep blasting through! We persevered, trusting the forecast would be right and things would lighten up, and were rewarded with a great day out on the water. It was not without its challenges as we still had a solid 10-15 knot SE with the odd shifty gust coming through. We opted for a simple triangle course to limit the need for gybing and its associated risks.

I’ll use the authors privileges here in not divulging my own mishaps but will gleefully report on Flying Fandango who ran aground very early in the piece (thanks for the photo evidence Drew), and we thought for a while they’d be hanging on the shore all afternoon! Harley, who normally has a huge debate with himself as to what size sail he’s going to use, had no such dilemma today and went straight to the small rig. He had an awesome dash to the start but then spent a bit too much time in the water so didn’t go so well in the later races.

Frivolous did well, taking the win in Race 2, while Topaz got a bit mixed up with the start sequence and rushed in too early. They made a solid come back and managed to get mum on handicap. Flying Fish continues to go from strength to strength and are regularly up at the pointy end of the fleet these days. They had a blinder for the final double triangle course in Race 3, coming in first place and hot on the heels of Cool Bubbles.

I very big thanks to Angie, Andrew, Russell and Drew for slogging in out on the start boat today – understand it was a little lumpy swaying on anchor in wind against tide. As always, you all do an amazing job setting out the course, running the starts and keeping a watchful eye over the fleet and the weather!

Series 4 Race 5 & 6, 12 April 2026
With a forecast of W, turning S, turning E, turning NE, at less than 5 knots, we were a little worried it was going to be a drifter. We rigged anyway, set the buoys out for a NE course and postponed for 30 minutes to wait……. Sure enough a gentle sea breeze started to kick in by about 1300, enough to keep us all moving. We had 7 boats on the water for the day and welcomed two new members, Riley and Madeleine, who fresh from a days green fleet training the month before (in glassy conditions on snapper ck), were recruited for crew positions on a couple of fifteens.
The (slow) dash to the start was won by Flying Fish on both line honours and handicap. Well-done Jonah and Riley! Cool Bubbles won the second race of the day, keeping out of the tide, adjusting all the ropey bits and generally demonstrating all their light weather skills. Come the final race of the day and it was time for Flying Fandango to shine, although there was a bit of a dubious maneuver at the top mark that left Shirosagi wedged in a Fandango – Bubbles sandwich and spat out the back.
Thanks to Andrew and Phil on Start Boat Duties and Di for cranking up the BBQ on our return.

The day began looking pretty wet and windy. As the start of racing neared the rain subsided and the wind ramped up so our Dash to the Start had us battling white caps and a gusty 15 knot south-easter just heading out of the creek. Poor Harley on his RS Aero had gone swimming three times before he’d even reached the red! Taking a right hand turn at the red towards Crab Creek, we at least had wind and tide cooperating, so whilst it was a hard slog to windward, at least it was less lumpy. Flying Fish was very quick on the dash, hot on the heels of Cool Bubbles, and picked up the win on handicap.

The second race had a challenging start line with a ripping tide that swept us from the start boat down to the pin in no time. Michelle and Ruby had its measure and timed it to perfection. The next challenge was beating up to number one. Most took their chances with the shallows, with Frivolous the first to come unstuck here, so Peter had to jump in and push the boat back to deep water. It can’t have slowed ‘them up too much as on handicap they were the victors.

Come race three, the wind hand dropped back below 10knots, the tide was stronger and lower now, and again we tacked up the shallows. This time it was Cool Bubbles that pushed it too far and both skipper and crew had to disembark to push the boat back on course. Well done the Flying Fandango who took both line honours and the win for the final marathon race (over an hour for most). We all rode the elevator home to the unenviable task of pulling the boats up a very long ramp.

We have a break now for three weeks and will get back into the cycle with the neap tides, but its always a bit of fun to test our skills out when there’s a big tide running, like today (2.3m – 0.6m). Thanks to Phil, Andrew and Angie for start boat duties.

Yesterday was another wet day for our Green Fleet but at least this time we had a nice 5 knot south easter with the odd gust and squall thrown in to create a bit more excitement. We had four boats out on the water with the two Quests, a Flying Fifteen and a Mirror Dinghy, that hadn’t seen the water for a long time. It was a delight to see those little red sails! Well done to Neil and Leila who successfully completed a couple spinnaker runs on the Quest.

Nine boats out for race day today. Conditions were a little heavier than expected, leading to some exhilarating runs and the odd knock down (all came back up). Well done to FAB who won all three races. For their penance, the handicap will be much higher next time. Jonah and Pippi on Flying fish also did very well, coming second for all three races. They’ve certainly skilled up following their participation in the Nationals. Thanks to Andrew, Phil and Min for running the start boat.
