Last weekend we finally rolled out the #16 BRK Fusion Kart at Blanchetown Dirt Kart Club for our first proper shakedown and what a learning curve it turned out to be.
With me currently on a probationary licence, we started rear of field for the entire meeting with 11 other drivers, but honestly right now the goal is simple, learn, get laps under my belt and keep improving every time we hit the track.
Heat 1: DNS
Unfortunately, the kart decided to test our patience early with the carby playing silly buggers. Under throttle it wanted to choke itself out, but somehow with no throttle it wanted to take off. I pulled in before the race even got going.
Thankfully, we were able to borrow another carby and bring the old girl back to life.
Heat 2: P10
Straight away things felt better. Every lap I was gaining confidence and getting more comfortable, but we still had issues with it four stroking down the long straight.
Heat 3: DNS
Another curveball, the kart refused to fire. Turns out the plug had fouled up from running too rich in the previous heat.
Heat 4: P7
Fresh plug in, pushed off from rear again and finally got a clean run. Managed to pinch one off the start and after a mid-race incident we were able to pick off a few more spots and bring it home in 7th.
For a first hit out, I’m genuinely stoked. Massive learning curve, plenty to work on and a heap to take away from the day, but most importantly we got laps, learnt a lot and came home in one piece.
A massive thank you to everyone that helped us get through the day. Jamie Starr and his team for the help all day and trusting us with a spare carby when we were in strife. Mark and Bradley for all the help with the kart and for pushing me off each heat And of course, my amazing partner for wrangling the kids all day.
The results come second when you’ve got the kids in the pits helping all day. Watching them get involved, learn and love being around motorsport already is something pretty bloody special and honestly this is exactly what Speedway was missing.
Now we pray to the weather gods and hopefully we’ll be back out this weekend at Adelaide Dirt Kart Club in Virginia.
Thank you to our sponsor and supports for their support!
